Computex has just begun in Taipei and Acer is already leading the pack with a steady stream of announcements. The company has just announced the launch of a brand new large screened Android smartphone. Called the Liquid S1, it packs a 720p 5.7 inch screen. Aimed at emerging markets in Asia and Europe, it will come equipped with dual SIM card slots. There are no plans to bring the smartphone to the US and hence it lacks LTE radios which are critical for the market. Powering the smartphone is a 1.5Ghz quad core Mediatek processor. This is paired with 1GB of memory which should be more than sufficient to facilitate multitasking. The software on top is Android 4.2 with an almost stock interface layer. That is not to say that the handset is running stock Android 4.2 because Acer has taken the time out to make some fairly useful additions to the software. Holding down on the multitasking button reveals a pop up window that offers shortcuts to windowed apps. This functionality is somewhat similar to the pop up window functions seen on Samsung's Android handsets.  The handset weighs 195 grams and is equipped with 8GB of storage that can be expanded ...

ASUS just announced the Fonepad Note FHD6 at a pre-Computex keynote in Taiwan today. The large device comes with a 6 inch full HD 1080p screen, and with a stylus in tow, this seems to be squarely aimed at the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Note 3, which might sport similar specifications and placement. Running on Android 4.2.2 Jellybean, it is powered by an Intel Z2560 chipset with a dual core 1.6 GHz processor and the PowerVR SGX 544MP2 GPU. Having witnessed the announcement at the event, we went to the demo area to take some photos of the device. While we were not allowed to go hands on with it, we were still able to take some handsome shots of the device, find them past the break. As we said earlier, the device comes with an in-built stylus just like the Note. There should be special tailored applications for the stylus, we presume. The front of the phone is dominated by a massive 6 inch screen which seems to be accompanied by a not-so-thin bezel and front facing stereo speakers. It certainly looks fatter than say, a Galaxy Mega 6.3. It comes in two variants of internal memory, with 16/32GB options. The FullHD ...

The ASUS MeMO Pad HD 7 was launched just a while ago, at a pre-Computex keynote in Taiwan. The 7 inch tablet's main USP is the price, which at 129$ for the base version is a steal. Coming in vibrant colours, the MeMO Pad has a 7 inch 1280x800 IPS screen with good viewing angles, unlike the ASUS Fonepad. Powered by a MediaTek quadcore MT8125 chip, the MeMO Pad runs on Android 4.2 JellyBean, which is currently the latest version of the popular software. After the event, we were at the presentation area, and we have brought you some photos from there. The 7 inch 1280x800 IPS display dominated the front with software based Android shortcuts instead of hardware capacitive buttons. This is much similar to the Fonepad. Above the display, you have the 1.2 MP front facing camera but without an ear piece because the tablet is not really geared for calling. It comes in four colours, with a glossy finish on everything but the black version which is matte. Over at the back, you have the 5 megapixel rear facing camera, which is, on paper, better than the 3.2 MP unit of the Fonepad. There is no LED flash though. Below, ...

Apple pushes for license deals as music streaming service launch at WWDC beckons

Apple, especially, Steve Jobs, is known to be a hard negotiator. Having revolutionized the digital music industry with the iTunes store, the media industry is no stranger to the ways and methods of Apple negotiations. But recently, Apple seems to have been going through a hard time negotiating with record labels and artists for one little reason, they are late. The music streaming service, which was pioneered by various start ups like Pandora in the US and Spotify in the Europe, is a novel way to listen to music, for free. Supported by advertising, the streaming services apparently make far less money than the traditional a la carte way of buying music, like the iTunes. They might be late but that doesn't stop Apple from launching their own streaming service, because that's the demand of the day. New York Times reports that Apple are pressing hard to finish the licensing deals with music companies as soon as possible so as to get the service ready for a WWDC reveal on June 10th. Most big companies including Microsoft, Google and even Nokia have a streaming service to their name. Google launched a Spotify+Pandora like service at their developers conference a month back, ...
