Google has finally released its stock Email app on the Google Play Store. This app comes pre-installed on Nexus and select Google Play edition devices, so it would be easy for Google to update the app with new features. According to the app store description, the update is not available for Google Play edition HTC One M7 and Galaxy S4 yet. If you don't know, the app supports, IMAP, POP3 and Exchange accounts, option to select folders to sync, auto download attachments via Wi-Fi and more. The latest v6.3 update adds better security for Gmail accounts, easy account setup, printing and also some bug fixes. Google's Gmail app already comes pre-installed on all devices approved for Google Mobile Services, the Email app lets you set up other email accounts such as Yahoo, Outlook etc. easily instead of relying on separate apps. There has been a number of rumors and leaks about a possible Nexus 6 especially since reports about Android Silver started surfacing the web. Also, Nexus 6 and Nexus 8 were spotted in Chromium Code. However, it is possible that Nexus 6 which is touted to be based on LG G3 might not be in the making. Ken Hong, LG’s Communications Director said in a recent interview that if Google was planning to make a Nexus 6 with LG he would have known about it. "I know at least not yet. Normally, we were informed. That can mean two things. Either I got ignored, or we simply won't be making [the Nexus 6]", said Ken Hong in the interview. Google has worked with HTC for the Nexus One, Samsung for the Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus, and LG for the Nexus 4 and 5. Ken also continued stating that he is fine if Google does not choose LG for the next Nexus device as it is not easy to make money and that they become too dependent on Google for the same. He also revealed that it is Google who determines how many Nexus handsets are to be made, so if there is a shortage of the handset, ...

Yesterday BlackBerry tied up with Amazon to bring the Amazon app store to BlackBerry OS BlackBerry 10 soon. The company also announced that it would shut down its BlackBerry Music and video stores on July 21st. Both these sections were launched along with the BlackBerry 10 last year. The music store initially started offering DRM-free music in 18 countries including India. The company shut down BBM Music, its own  cloud-based music service in June, in less than 2 years after it launched. BlackBerry said that BlackBerry World will continue to offer music and video services via third party applications. Even after the music and video stores are shut down, all the previously downloaded content will be available after that date through MyWorld, it said. Looks like a lot of alternatives and third-party offerings for music and videos would be coming later this year.

ART to replace Dalvik runtime on next version of Android

$

Google has been experimenting with the ART runtime compiler for quite some time now. Introduced initially alongside Android 4.4 KitKat, it was far from ready to be deployed as the default. However, over the months stability has improved multi fold and so has application compatibility. What exactly is the difference between the two compilers? The current compiler ie Dalvik is a JIT compiler. JIT means Just In Time. What this means is that it will compile code only when the app needs it. In comparison, ART relies on Ahead Of Time compiling which will run the code before it is needed. Since it compiles the code at the time of installation, it will offer improved performance, better battery life with slightly larger installed app sizes being a tradeoff. Another possible tradeoff is that applications that haven't been rewritten for ART may not work properly. That said, most popular applications have long since been updated. Dalvik is dead, long live Dalvik! DO NOT MERGE croot cd libcore repo start dalvik-is-dead-long-live-dalvik . repo sync -c . git rm -r libdvm git add JavaLibrary.mk (after removing libdvm references, adding explict core-libart references) git add Docs.mk (after replacing references to libdvm with libart) git add ...

Google is planning to add a kill switch option to the next version of Android according to reports. The feature lets users safeguard their smartphones owing to thefts.  It enables users with stolen devices to report their device as missing and disable it from being used without specific credentials in an incident of theft. Microsoft is also joining Google to add the kill switch option to Windows Phone. Both the companies have signed an agreement with the New York Attorney General for the same. Google already provides Android Device Manager which provides users with the option to remotely wipe or lock their stolen devices. It also is capable of tracking the phones’ location – for which the GPS needs to be switched on. Hence, it is not clear, whether Google will add the new security feature into the Android Device Manager or launch a completely new protection layer. Apple already has the kill switch option for the iPhone that was announce in September last year and the New York City Attorney General cited that there was a 19% decrease in iPhone thefts ever since the feature was implemented; whereas Samsung phones that still didn't carry the feature experienced a 40% increase in robberies. Google has released and introduction video for Android Wear, its platform for wearable devices. The video posted on YouTube gives a peek about what the platform can do. Google discusses Android Wear’s voice-control capabilities and how notifications on a smartphone can be directed to a wearable device with minimal effort. In addition, long with notifications, devs can access and retrieve data from the smartphone to a device like a smartwatch and vice-versa. They can also access information from sensors in real-time, which urges more involved user experience. Narrated by Timothy Jordan, a developer advocate at Google, the video goes on saying that the wearable devices take less time to access as compared to a smartphone. This essentially means that it takes a lot of time for a user to check a notification on their smartphone as they have to take it out of pocket and then unlock it, whereas it is easy to do the same with a wearable as it is always ready to access in front of you. Google Wear devices will need to be able to receive voice commands via a microphone and hence "OK Google" will be the center point of all Android Wear devices. The smart wearable devices will also have ...

Quanta to begin manufacturing Apple iWatch with 2.5″ screen, Pulse Sensor in July

It is an open secret that Apple is working on a wearable device. The iWatch as it has been termed by industry pundits is expected to tie in heavily with Cupertino's Healthkit push. Now, via a report published by Reuters, we have access to a few more details about the upcoming smartwatch. The report suggests that Apple has adopted a seemingly large 2.5 inch screen with a 'slightly rectangular face'. What that means remains open for interpretation but we suspect that it refers to rounded corners. Owing to the size of the display, the fascia is expected to protrude from the band instead of sitting flush with it. The interface will of course be touch based as expected.  Given the tie in with Health Kit, it is no surprise that Apple is believed to be cramming down as many sensors as it can into the watch. This includes a heart rate monitor in addition to step counters, sleep quality trackers and much more. It has also been rumored that the iWatch will be able to check blood glucose levels but we really don't think Apple will start selling a watch that can draw blood automatically every few hours! Apple has contracted LG for ...
