Cube, Pipo, Ramos... these are 3 of the most popular names in the Chinese tablet industry, ones that have managed to find a place on the world map thanks to the often very high VFM aspect that their devices bring along. If Chinese tablets aren't your thing, its time for you to start celebrating, for budget tablets powered by the Windows OS are all set to go on sale later this year. Microsoft had previously announced their relaxed policy for Windows licenses, which meant that any manufacturer wanting to produce devices with screens lesser in size than 9 inches could obtain a license free of cost. We believe that Microsoft's latest announcement regarding $99 Windows tablets revolves around the same idea. We now measure ourself by total device space. We have a much bigger opportunity than we've ever had in the past to grow our business, but we have to rethink how we look at our business. - Microsoft COO, Kevin Turner Once the world leader is the OS space, Microsoft is now left with a mere 14% share revealed Turner in his presentation. Turner attributed this to the rising smartphone and tablet usage, a market Microsoft seemingly wish to exploit in the coming months. The ...

Microsoft has updated Skype for Windows 8.1 by adding support for free group video calling. The feature will let Windows 8.1 tablet or two-in-one device users enjoy free group video calls. The free group video calling support was rolled out  to Mac, Windows and Xbox in April this year. Now, users can add upto 10 people in video calls at one time. Prior to this update, only Premium users could use this service at $9.99 per month. "We’ve found that most group calls take place between three or four participants.  When building the group video calling experience for modern Windows, we optimized so that the three most talkative people – plus yourself – are visible at the same time" said Skype in a company blog post. Skype further stated that users could now double tap on people who are not talking during a group video call to see their video feed in full-screen. Unfortunately, free group video calling feature still has to make way to its app on mobile platforms like Windows, Android and iOS. Check out the video below to know more about group video calling httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cjmdX4ZYKAw The updated Windows 8.1 app is now available for download in the Windows Store.

In a bid to improve your search result on mobile, Google has added a new feature. The latest update will now alert users if a certain website is not compatible with their Android smartphone or tablet. Google said that, although most sites can be visited on Chrome, it is possible that there are some of them that are not suitable for mobile viewing and hence might occur some issue. "Starting today, we will indicate to searchers when our algorithms detect pages that may not work on their devices. For example, Adobe Flash is not supported on iOS devices or on Android versions 4.1 and higher, and a page whose contents are mostly Flash may be noted" said Google in a company blog post. Yesterday there was a report that Celkon and Intex are the new handset partners for Google's Android One project. Now, fresh reports are stating that Google will subsidize the handsets to give them a price tag below $100 (Rs 6000). Aimed at emerging markets starting with India, the Android One program involves Google supplying reference hardware to handset makers, who can use the guidelines to manufacture smartphones that will retail for $100 or less. Initial partners of the Android One project are Micromax, Karbonn and Spice. Micromax and Karbonn account for approximately 25% of smartphone shipments in India, trailing behind market leader Samsung, which has maintained a roughly 35% share. Google showed off Micromax's first device Android One with a 4.5″ screen, Dual SIM functionality, FM radio and SD card support at the I/O developer conference. The Android One project is a move from Google to urge people to make a shift from feature phones to smartphones and hence has decided to keep the price tag low. Earlier this week there were reports that Google will spend more than Rs. 100 crore with its partners on advertising and marketing for the $100 smartphone. Via:Gigaom

Xiaomi Redmi, Redmi Note with LTE spotted at the Chinese certification database

Xiaomi is being talked about all over the online and offline media, and rightly so. Not only did the China based firm announce a flagship-esque phone for a budget price, but it also has been teasing its upcoming handset, believed to be the next-in-line flagship Xiaomi Mi4. Besides that, something that caught our attention earlier today were images of LTE enabled Redmi phones from the company. While Xiaomi has announced the Redmi 1S and Redmi Note for India, neither of the two come with on-board LTE. This means that the company could be up to something more than just the Mi4 for the launch event scheduled for the 22nd of this month. However, the Redmi that we spotted at the certification database appears to be the original, MediaTek powered version and not the Snapdragon 400 powered Redmi 1S that launched in India. If that is the case, we have good reason to believe that Xiaomi would be using the MT6582 + MT6290 (LTE chip) combo that has lately found a lot of takers. Given the poor penetration of LTE networks in India, we wouldn't be surprised if the company doesn't launch these LTE variants in the country. In fact, it could well be ...
