Sony Xperia Z Ultra Photo Gallery

Sony launched its big ass new smartphone, the Xperia Z Ultra in India though it won't be available in retail till 2nd August. We've previously done a hands on with the handset that borders on being a tablet and here are some additional images of the 6.4" behemoth. Our initial impressions are quite positive and if you can look past the size, the Xperia Z Ultra is definitely a very impressive device. Sony's new Triluminous Display with with X-Reality engine works wonders and is a much needed improvement over the dim and not very impressive screen on the Xperia Z. The 6.4" panel has a resolution of 1920x1080. Additionally, there are no capacitive buttons here and users can navigate the interface through the onscreen buttons.  Over on the left side of the handset is the magnetic dock connector. Sony is bringing accessories like covers with built in batteries and a dock for the handset to India as well. The presence of a dedicated dock port instead of micro USB definitely helps here. The build quality of the handset really is quite spectacular and it has IP55 / IP58 rating for dust and water resistance. The microSD card and micro SIM card slots are hidden under a ...

Oppo confirms new camera centric N-lens series of devices

We have already seen how the Oppo Find 5 had a great camera. If that wasn't any indication how the Chinese company is serious about cameras, we have more information coming in. Oppo has just confirmed to Engadget on a previous scoop that they are indeed developing a new series of camera centric devices dubbed the "N-Lens". These devices are more of connected cameras and less of cameraphones if the initial information is to be believed. But, the company also says that the N-Lens series of devices will be "most important flagship series for Oppo going forward." Having said that, it is quite hard to imagine if they are going down the "phone with a camera slapped on its back" route or the "camera that can connect to internet services" route. But considering the company's minimalistic design roots, we think they will probably stick to better usability scenarios by making a connected camera instead, which pits it directly against the Galaxy Camera rather than the S4 Zoom or the Nokia Lumia 1020. According to the earlier scoop, the N-Lens flagship will have a high resolution sensor with superb low light capabilities, which seems vague at best. Will the company end up in ...

Samsung caught optimizing Galaxy S4 for better benchmark performance

Samsung phones have always performed well in the benchmarks. Usually their flagships take top spots in the benchmark and now a member of Beyond3D found that Samsung had optimized their GPU to run at a higher clock speed only for certain benchmarks. To look into the matter, folks at AnandTech decided to check if the claim the was authentic and it turned out to be true. Samsung Galaxy S4's International Edition with the Exynos SoC has performed slightly better in benchmarks over the US version running Snapdragon 600 and the reason seems to be that Samsung has over-clocked its GPU to perform better in the benchmarks like AnTutu, Quadrant and Linpack. They were also able to uncover Samsung's "Benchmark Booster" program code within the S4 that is responsible for over-clocking the device. From technical point of view, the Galaxy S4's Exynos GPU is set to run at 480MHz in most of the apps and games and certain less popular benchmarks, but when popular benchmarks like AnTutu and Quadrant are run, the GPU automatically runs at 532MHz and thereby giving an improved performance. Samsung was also found to tinker with the CPU performance as the four Cortex A15 clocks continuously ran at 1.2 ...

The Oppo Find 5 is one of the very few phones in the world to receive updates driven by the community. If you had read our review, you might have have noticed us mentioning the overwhelming community support the device gets. Yes, there is a robust feedback system that the company employs thanks to the limited availability and a responsive fan base. Considering the feedback, they released an OTA update earlier, with bug fixes mostly dominating the changelog, and similarly there is another update available now, but this time they have added quite a lot of feature, read past the break to find the changelog. Samsung denies benchmark boosting allegations, says it’s normal for most fullscreen apps

0

Just hours ago, we had seen how Samsung had boosted its benchmark scores for a favourable result in comparison to the competition. After all the brouhaha surrounding this issue, Samsung has spoken up, denying the allegations by saying that most full screen apps have the access to full GPU clock speed. That said, the vague response on the company's Korean website doesn't seem to explain what "Benchmark booster" actually means. Initially, according to AnandTech, Samsung seemingly added hooks in the code that made the GPU run at a higher clock speed and boosted the base clock of the CPU to a default maximum when in certain apps like the popular benchmark tools like Antutu, Quadrant Advanced etc. There was also evidence found in the code mentioning all the benchmark apps and calling a specific "Benchmark booster" app. This raised eyebrows around the community for Samsung's shady practices and this is what they happen to say in response- Under ordinary conditions, the GALAXY S4 has been designed to allow a maximum GPU frequency of 533MHz. However, the maximum GPU frequency is lowered to 480MHz for certain gaming apps that may cause an overload, when they are used for a prolonged period of time ...

Xolo Play T1000 Review

One of the first mid range handsets to be equipped with a Tegra 3 processor, the Xolo Play T1000 brings with it a promise of high end gaming capabilities. Xolo claims it to be an overall competitive device which should provide some much needed competition in this space. Does it live up to its claims ? We test that and more in our review below. Read on to find out. Design The handset doesn't really stray from the tried and tested design language and is essentially a giant touch screen slab with physical elements like the buttons built around the screen's frame. The front has a large 4.7 inch 720p screen that is of the IPS variety and is built around the One-Glass Solution technology that is all the rage these days. The screen doesn't seem to have a Gorilla Glass layer and is unfortunately very fingerprint and smudge prone. That said, the display itself is gorgeous. Over on the right side we have the power key and volume rocker. The buttons have good tactile feedback and while we'd have preferred a centered power key, it wasn't much of a stretch to reach it. The left side of the phone is bereft of ...

Apple CEO Tim Cook meets China Mobile head to talk cooperation: Reuters

China Mobile, the world's largest operator by volume of subscribers is also the only operator in China that doesn't offer iPhones or iPads for sale. The primary reason why China Mobile doesn't offer Apple products is due to the company's homegrown TD-SCDMA technology for 3G, which is an exclusive standard for the operator, for which most companies produce custom radios in their phones. But this might change soon, with Reuters reporting that Apple's CEO Tim Cook is in talks with China Mobile's Chairman Xi Guohua, for a possible cooperation between the two giants. This comes at a time when Apple reported a 43% drop in sales in the Asia region, and a large chunk of it is from Greater China. This also coincides with China Mobile's poor 3G user base when compared to the competition which offers iPhones as well as globally supported 3G networks. It looks like both companies need each other at this crucial juncture. Apple wants its phones on the world's largest operator, and China Mobile wants Apple's phones to spruce up the dwindling 3G user base. Will the deal finally work out and will the cheap iPhone support the TD-SCDMA network for 3G? Interesting times ahead, and ...

Samsung Galaxy S4 Active Review

Samsung’s Galaxy line of phones is arguably the most popular mobile brand on the planet right now, with the Galaxy S4 selling 20 million units worldwide since its launch just a few months ago. Keen to capitalise on the buzz surrounding the iconic name, the Korean company has expanded the portfolio with spin-off devices, including the Galaxy S4 Mini, Galaxy S4 Zoom and Galaxy S4 Active. While the two former phones do little more than exploit the name to gain attention, the S4 Active offers the same power as the original S4 model - with the bonus of carrying IP67 certification, which means it is dust and water resistant. Does this make it a better choice for prospective purchasers, or is this sporty variant not worth bothering with? Keep reading to find out. Design Despite possessing a water and dust proof casing, the Galaxy S4 Active has the same thin and lightweight design as the standard S4. It’s just over 9mm thick and is just a tad longer than the S4 itself. However, the shiny back panel has been replaced by a honeycomb-patterned cover, bookended by two rubber-coated plastic sections which provide a little bit of protection should you accidently drop the device. ...

Google extends Windows Phone calendar and contact syncing deadline to December 31st

There was huge uproar after Google announced its plans to drop EAS support for all non-corporate GMail accounts, mainly because that affected Windows Phone, which has no in-built support for the new CardDAV and CalDAV technologies. Hence Microsoft and Google decided to extend the support for Windows Phone devices until July 31st, yesterday, a date from which devices without the GDR2 update would have stopped supporting syncing to Google servers. Thankfully, the companies have extended the date yet again, to December 31st, since most devices haven't got the update yet. Much has been said about the bitterness between the two American giants, battling a war of ecosystems in a large scale. Larry Page recently spoke how companies like Microsoft are using Google's services for their own benefits, like the GTalk support in Outlook. Days later, Google released hangouts, replacing Talk, and based on a proprietary protocol. Microsoft on the other hand haven't been quiet, with the incessant marketing attacks like "Scroogled" and other privacy based campaigns. There is no signs of the two companies patching up, but at least this whole mail protocol uproar has been fixed. The GDR2 update brings a lot of under the hood features, including the support ...

Micromax Canvas 4 vs Canvas HD

0
0
Micromax has slowly grown from a company selling entry-level feature phones to the company creating much hype in the mid-range phablet market in India. Things started to fall in place for Micromax with the Canvas 2 which was launched less than a year ago. Within the last six months, we have seen two flagships from Micromax Canvas HD in February and now the Canvas 4 in July. The Canvas HD was a big update over the Canvas 2 considering its quad-core processor, HD display and newer version of Android. The Canvas 4 is not a huge upgrade over the Canvas HD expect in terms of build quality, better camera and more recent version of Android out of the box. Let's check out how the Canvas 4 performs against its successor Canvas HD. httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Vm1KWJGy28 Design One of the most notable changes in the Canvas 4 from Canvas HD is its new design language and a better build quality. The Canvas HD itself was a solidly built, but Micromax outdid the Canvas HD with the introduction of brushed Aluminum in the Canvas 4. The new Canvas 4 feels quite premium and feels solid in hand. On the front of the device, Canvas 4 has a neat arrangement of ...

Samsung to supply Retina displays for the next iPad mini

Samsung and Apple might be involved in a lot of patent cases, but their partnership continues to flourish. Samsung is tipped to be the provider of the retina display for next generation iPad mini that is rumored to arrive by the end of this year. According to a report by WSJ, people familiar with the companies have indicated that Samsung will be mass producing the retina displays to supply for the new iPad mini. While the display size of 7.9inch is expected to remain the same, Apple is rumored to try out different back colors for the mini tablet. Various components makers were informed that Apple was planning to use displays from Samsung, LG and Sharp. According to rumors, Apple's initial plan was to use displays from just LG and Sharp, but now it has also added Samsung to ensure adequate supply. The display for current generation Apple iPad mini is produced by LG and AU Corporations. Earlier there were rumors that the retina display iPad may arrive only in 2014, but with the recent launch of Nexus 7 (2013) by Google, Apple may be pushed to introduce the Retina iPad Mini this year. Apple is trying to reduce its dependency on Samsung ...

Is Nokia launching a tablet at the September 26-27 NYC event?

0

It's been long rumoured that Nokia is launching a Windows tablet, and that might actually come true if the recent leaks are to be believed. Windows Phone Central reports that Nokia is having a launch event in New York on September 26th and 27th spanning two days, for a rumoured tablet announcement. The above image is a screenshot of a purported event invite that is doing the rounds internally. Is this actually the Nokia World event this year? Quite possibly. The timeframe of the event suggests that this is possibly a grand reveal, just like the reveal of the Lumia 920 last year. After having launched the Lumia 1020 just now, Nokia might not be launching yet another flagship or a range of devices soon, so the possibility of a tablet launch is high. Also, according to WPCentral, the Nokia phablet is scheduled to be announced only after the Windows Phone GDR3 update in November, that adds support for 1080p displays. So that rules out yet another possible release, which makes us wonder about the tablet again. To reinforce our suspicions, there was a recent leak in GFXBench, a benchmarking tool used by testers. This revealed a Nokia device codenamed RX-114, running ...

Samsung tops Apple in a new customer satisfaction survey

Samsung has finally topped Apple in a customer satisfaction survey. The new customer survey conducted by American Customer Satisfaction Index is first of its kind with the survey containing individual smartphones. According to the ACSI survey, Samsung comes out on top with its yesteryear stars - Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2. Both the phones scored 84 on a scale of 100 and are placed first. The next device in the list is Apple's iPhone 5 which has secured a rating of 82. The list did not include Samsung's current flagship - Galaxy S4 as the survey was conducted before the Galaxy S4 was launched. The list has iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 in 4th and 5th places respectively with scores of 82 and 81. The rest of the list includes - Droid Razr Maxx HD with 80, Samsung Galaxy SII with 78, Droid Razr with 77, Blackberry Bold with 67 and Blackberry Curve with 64. This is the first time that Samsung is ahead of Apple in a customer survey, and Apple could consider it as a bad sign. Even more disturbing news for Apple is that their customers find little difference between their iPhone 5, iPhone 4S or iPhone 4 ...
