Intel revealed its first prototype smartphone built on its next Atom smartphone chip codenamed Merrifield. The processor chip is slated to provide a 50 percent performance boost over current chips and will have much improved battery life as well. Shown off by Tom Kilroy during the keynote session at Computex, the chip will ship to carriers and device makers early next year. Kilroy also stated that we should expect to see the first phones running on the Merrifield chip at MWC 2014.  The successor to Intel's Cloverfield chip is being aimed at high performance smartphones. The reveal comes at a time when Intel is trying to make itself relevant in the mobile phone market. Declining sales of traditional computers means that the company has to diversify and shed its complete reliance on the PC market. Intel also showed off some Android and Windows tablets running on the upcoming Bay Trail chip that includes LTE capabilities. Intel acquired Infineon's wireless chip unit in 2010 and their work on LTE radios is expected to make it to Intel's Atom chip. Tablets running on the Bay Trail chip are expected to range between $200 and $500 in pricing when they launch later this year.

At the Computex event in Taipei, they have gone ahead and announced that their Snapdragon 800 series of powerful high end chipsets will include support for the Windows RT 8.1 platform. Powered by quad core processors with upto 2.2 GHz clock speeds per core, this marks a huge upgrade from the yesteryear dual core S4 plus chipsets that were used for the first Windows RT tablets, like the Dell XPS 10 for example. The Adreno 330 graphics is supposed to offer even greater graphics performance, and with additional support of in-built LTE and USB 3.0, the performance and feature gains for the Windows RT 8.1 are massive. HTC sales touch $970 million, it’s best month since June 2012

HTC has revealed its monthly revenues for May 2013 and it might be considered the first sign of recovery for the ailing smartphone manufacturer. The company posted sales worth $970 million which is just 3% lower than what it last reported in May 2012. While not out of the danger zone yet, the sales revenues reported by HTC are close to double that in April and is the best month of business since June 2012. The sales boost can be owed to the excellent reviews for the HTC One around the world and accompanying sales. The Taiwanese smartphone manufacturer is said to have sold almost 5 million units of the HTC One. However all is not rosy at the smartphone manufacturer that has seen several execs being ousted. The latest in this line is COO Matthew Costello who is leaving his role at HTC. It is still not clear if he has been fired or has put in his resignation. It will be interesting to see if HTC can make a  complete recovery and will have to continue introducing a range of compelling products to keep up the momentum.

Halo, the multi billion dollar game franchise that rapidly achieved cult status along with the launch of the Original Xbox, is finally coming to other Microsoft platforms including Windows 8 as a metro style app and Windows Phone 8. The game, called "Spartan Assault" is a fill-in story set in the years between Halo 3 and Halo 4. The top down single player resembles games like GunBros for example, with controls on the screen in the case of a touchscreen. The story revolves around the history of human-covenant conflict, the rise of commander Sarah Palmer, who is a part of the Spartan special ops program and more. httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BxsYQtltOco The game spans 25 missions and you can choose to play either a male or a female character. The game, like the recently released cross platform Skulls of Shogun, will have the ability to transfer game saves from, say a Windows 8 PC, to a Windows Phone 8 device with ease. So, a Halo game has finally arrived for the whole ecosystem of Windows devices with intuitive game continuity using cloud saves. Took a long time, but is the game going to satisfy the ...

Indian smartphone manufacturers have improved their game significantly over the past few months. On the forefront alongside its contemporaries is Gionee that has been introducing some truly compelling hardware. We were quite pleasantly surprised by the Gionee Dream D1 that we reviewed some time back and were hence quite excited when the company passed us the Elife E3 to check out. What do we think about the handset ? Read on to find out more. Design The moment you set your eyes on the Elife E3, you know that the handset stands out from the crowd thanks to its svelte 7.9mm profile. The use of muted pastel shades instead of the drab black and white used by most too makes the handset appear attractive. The front of the phone is mostly dominated by the 4.7 inch 720p LCD IPS screen. Fairly large bezel space can be seen on the top and bottom but not so much on the sides of the handset which makes it quite comfortable to hold. A 2MP front facing camera is located above the IPS display to facilitate video calling. Below the screen lie three capacitive buttons as is the norm for Android running devices. The buttons correspond to back, ...

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 inch was just announced yesterday along with the Galaxy Tab 3 8 inch version. One of the main takeaways from the announcement is the presence of an Intel chip inside the Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 inch version. Intel was particularly proud of the fact and boasted about its first low power LTE implementation for the same, in its blog. Sporting a Intel Z2560 "CloverTrail+" chip, the device has connectivity powered by the Intel XMM7160 multi mode LTE modem in some markets. Stepping up their efforts in the mobile space(finally), Intel has launched several SoCs specifically for the mobile market with faster processors, better battery life and overall suited for on-the-go computing. The dual core Atom processors in the CloverTrail+ platform are clocked at 1.6 GHz with HyperThreading enabled to make them look like quad core processors, at least logically. Chugging along for the graphics processing is the PowerVR SGX 544MP2 from Imagination technologies. Interesting to see Intel use PowerVR chips instead of their own solutions, which eventually will end up in future Bay Trail Atom chipsets set to start shipping in Q3 2013. Anyway, for more information on the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 inch go ...

Lenovo has launched a total of six smartphones today, at an event in New Delhi, India. Amongst the six, the Lenovo A706 is a mid range model with modest specs and a equally modest price. With a 4.5 inch FWGA 854x480 display, the A706 might be lacking when directly compared with the 5 inch 720p displays in competing phones of the same price range, but it makes up for it in having an IPS display. The device is powered by a 1GHz quad core processor, and if our assumptions are true, it is a slightly underclocked version of the Snapdragon 200 MSM8225Q with Adreno 203 graphics. Priced at Rs. 15,949, this is Lenovo's play at the mid range.
