HTC has started rolling out Android 5.0 Lollipop update for One M8 unlocked and developer edition models. The update was confirmed by HTC's VP of Product Management Mo Versi’s on his Twitter account.
As promised by HTC, the update did roll out to the One M8 withing the 90 days time period that was announced in October last year. The software version 4.16.1540.8 is expected weighs about 584 megabytes and is expected to start hitting the One M8 devices soon. The Android 5.0 Lollipop update will add the Material Design features which will bring bold colors and revamped UI with small animations. In addition other features like update for lock screen and notifications, support for multiple pages of recent apps, enhanced privacy features and a search function within settings, etc will be included.
Other carrier customized HTC One M8 devices like Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile might soon follow and receive the Lollipop update. The Lollipop update will also bring a new version of Sense 6 UI for the HTC One M8 device.

Tesco has embraced another type of wearable technology by becoming the first major UK retailer to launch an app for Google Glass. The new app allows shoppers to browse goods, view nutritional information and add items to the basket and is voice activated like the rest of the Glass experience.
The new app, called Tesco Grocery, works alongside existing Tesco.com grocery accounts and automatically adds products to the online basket. There are two ways to add items to the basket - by doing a voice search and selecting from available items using the button on the side of the headset or by scanning a product barcode using the camera (the latter seems much simpler).
Some potential practical uses of the app include with the weekly shop; for example, if you noticed you were running out of bread, you could scan the barcode using the camera and add it to your basket or if you wanted a bottle of wine, you could do a voice search and select from the extensive range of wines.

HTC is continuing to bring more of its custom apps to the Google Play Store. The latest one to hit the Play Store is its own Sense web browser that is dubbed as HTC Internet.
The browser is compatible only to HTC devices and is specially for Sense which is the company's UI on top on Android. HTC Internet has received couple of tweaks including text wrapping when zooming, a redesigned interface, and an offline reading mode. It is compatible with smartphones and tablets running Sense and Android Kit Kat or higher.
Until now, HTC has bought a range of its custom apps like Blink Feed, Sense TV, Sense Keyboard, Lock Screen, Weather and Camera to the Google Play Store.

Google Translate has been updated with a couple of important features that focuses on easier communication. The app on Android and iPhone is getting real time speech translation along with the Word Lens integration.
Earlier this week, it was reported that Google Translate for Android is getting conversation mode and real time translation. Google Translate is now getting automatic language detection in conversation mode meaning it will detect the language that is being spoken instantly. This better enables a real-time conversation to take place between two different languages.
In order to start the translation, users will have to tap into the mic and start talking in a selected language and then tap again and Google Translate will automatically recognize the language that is being spoken. Moreover, the app is also using its Word Lens acquisition to add another new feature. The Google Translate app now offers instant translation for written text. Users will have to simply to point their phone's camera to a sign and it will translate the word immediately. Prior to this update, users had to take a picture of text and mark which words they wanted translated.

Tizen has long been considered as a possible competitor to Android but it was practically dead in the water till the time rumors of a Tizen based smartphone emerged. Its been a long while coming and today, Samsung finally revealed the Z1 as a budget minded handset that takes a departure from the familiar territory of Android based low end devices. Is it any good and more importantly do we foresee the competition to be hit hard? That's something we'll try to answer in the text below.
The handset carries the design language that is standard across Samsung devices. It is nigh impossible to call the design fresh but it is unmistakably Samsung. The front of the phone has a 4inch WVGA display with a PLS panel. The screen looks good and is reasonably viewable even in brightly lit scenarios. We found viewing angles to be quite good. Below the display is a single hardware home button which is flanked by two capacitive buttons that correspond to menu and back. The button configuration and front fascia of the phone will be familiar to anyone who has used a Samsung Android device.

Google's Project Ara that is known for it modular smartphone will make its debut later this year. The 'Market Pilot' will be launched in Puerto Rico, announced Google at its Ara Developer Conference.
The company notes that it chose Puerto Rico because of its high level of mobile engagement. 77 percent of its users access the internet primarily through mobile devices and the country features both American and Latin American carriers. The devices will be available through two Puerto Rico-based carriers, OpenMobile and Claro, and will be sold through "food truck" style stores.
The first Project Ara model dubbed as "Spiral 2" sports a 720 x 1280 resolution screen and includes dual application processors like Marvell PXA1928 and the NVIDIA Tegra K1. There is also a 5MP camera on the phone which supports 3G, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity. A "Spiral 3" is also in the works and will have 4G LTE functionality and will be equipped with improved antennas.

Microsoft has updated Skype for iPhone with an array of new features. The version 5.9 brings several improvements for the user interface, particularly to the dial pad and new chat picker.
The latest enhancements are aimed at making conversations easy and quick. Skype adds contact suggestions to the dial pad when entering a number making the process of finding the right person to dial quicker. The update also adds shortcuts for starting video or audio calls from Skype’s chat picker window. By tapping the message icon on the bottom navigation bar, the chat picker will open and users can easily start a conversation when you are in the recents, favorites, or people view.
Skype 5.9 for iPhone also debuts the pre-release program for iOS, through which you can provide feedback and get access to early versions of the app. Users who are interested in the program will have to sign up, provided they agree to update the company with "regular feedback" as each update is rolled out to them. Applicants must also be 18 years or older with a valid email address and Skype or Microsoft account.

Few weeks after releasing Android 5.0.2 factory image for the Nexus 7 (2012) WiFi, Google has released Android 5.0.2 factory images for Nexus 10 and 7 2013 (WiFi). According to the official changelog released earlier, the Android 5.0.2 update fixes storage issues and alarm problems.
Google released Android 5.0.1 (Lollipop) update last month that added some bug fixes. The Android 5.0 Lollipop update that was released in November brings Material Design, better notifications, battery saver feature, better security including Android Smart Lock, New Quick Settings, Improved network hand offs, flexible sharing, faster, smoother and more powerful experience with ART, 15 new languages and more.
You can download factory images for the Nexus 7 (2012) Wi-Fi from the Google Developers website here. OTA update is not available as of now. Google has not released the minor 5.0.2 update for Nexus 6, Nexus 5 and Nexus 9.
Google Maps has been updated with voice based lane guidance feature for 20 cities in India. The feature will allow users to see and hear voice guided instructions on which lane they should stay.
The Android and iOS app is updated in cities like Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Coimbatore, Delhi, Hyderabad, Indore, Jaipur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Mysore, Nagpur, Pune, Surat, Thiruvananthapuram, Vadodara and Visakhapatnam . Users will also be able to receive lane guidance also on the Mumbai-Pune expressway.

Google says that turn by turn voice navigation instruction will be available in English in Indian accent and Hindi as well. Maps in India received Hindi language support in July last year and they received Material Design features in November.

Microsoft has started rolling out its latest Denim update to Lumia devices. The update brings new features from Windows Phone 8.1 as well as some Lumia specific features which are exclusive to Microsoft’s own devices.
For starters, the Lumi devices will get a Cortana voice activation which is available in the U.S. but will now also be available in China and the UK in “beta” and in “alpha” in Australia, Canada India, France, Italy, Germany and Spain. The update adds improvements to the Cortana like natural-language scenarios, snooze times for reminders and being able to access Cortana in the car through the car-kit integration.
The Cortana will get active by simply calling out "Hey Cortana" when the phone is in idle state. Moving on the update will add live folders on start screen. Other features include the ability to create app folders and get fitness and health related information from the Glance screen. In addition, Internet Explorer is even receiving enhancements that enables fast browsing and better downloading speeds on mobile websites.
