Google Maps for Android gets support for Local Guides and more

Google has updated Maps for Android with new features. The company is adding integration for Local Guides service that has users reviewing local businesses and share them with others. Google renamed the City Expert program to Local Guides last month. It is a platform where Google asks users to provide more high-quality reviews and add photos about places. The move from Google is to compete with the likes of Yelp, Urbanspoon, and others. Users who are contributing to Local Guides are rewarded by Google for their reviews. Guides climb the ranks by the number of reviews they add and a local badge appears after completing 50 reviews. At this point of time, it looks like Google is interested in number of reviews and not the quality of it. Interested users can sign up to the Local Guides page here and start reviewing. The latest update bumps Google Maps to version 9.4. Last month Google Maps received voice lane guidance in 20 Indian cities and prior to this Maps for iOS and Android were updated with Material Design. via

Samsung Galaxy Alpha vs Apple iPhone 6

Almost every handset announced since the launch of the first iPhone back in 2007 has been referred to as the "iPhone killer" or "iPhone copycat" at some point but mostly these claims are unfounded. In the case of the Galaxy Alpha however, Samsung have delivered a handset that shares many hallmarks with Apple's latest iPhone 6 but exactly how close are these two handsets? The iPhone 6 follows Apple's past design philosophy but is the second largest iPhone ever made (surpassed only by its bigger sibling the iPhone 6 Plus). The front is dominated by a 4.7 inch LED-backlit Retina Display with 750 x 1334 pixels resolution (which equates to approximately 326 pixels per inch density). In comparison, the Galaxy Alpha also has a 4.7 inch display with 720 x 1280 pixesl resolutions which is roughly 312 pixels per inch density. The key difference between the two however is that the Galaxy Alpha sports a Super AMOLED pentile display - whilst the Super AMOLED technology is market leading, the use of a pentile display detracts away from the quality but despite this, the Galaxy Alpha display appears better than the iPhone 6. The Galaxy Alpha was announced in August and released in September ...

HTC records profits for third quarter in succession

It wasn't long ago that HTC was reporting successive losses each quarter but the company's switch to producing more high-quality low-end handsets seems to have paid off with the reporting of their third successive profitable quarter. The comeback started last year and their latest quarter showed increased profits as a result of a growth despite predictions of declines throughout 2014. Revenue during the quarter grew 12 percent year-on-year to a total of NT$47.9 billion ($1.524 billion( in the fourth quarter but whether the rise is due to increased handset sales or higher margins is uncertain. The back-end of last year saw interest in HTC's lower-end smartphones increase by a significant amount and it's likely that the additional unit sales at the lower-end of the pricing scale contributed a large degree towards to the revenues. Alongside the increased revenues, the company reported a quarterly net profit of NT$0.5 billion after tax (which equates to NT$0.57 per share) with a gross margin of 20.4% and an operating margin of 0.4%. Peter Chou, CEO of HTC, said: “HTC finished the year with a third consecutive quarter of profitability, and is well-positioned to build on that solid platform in the year ahead by ensuring our portfolio is highly ...

Honor may be a young company but they're taking the market by storm by picking up where the Nexus range left off in offering flagship handsets at a very competitive price point. In its short existence, the company has managed to sell 30 million handsets with their current flagships - the Honor 6 and Honor 6 Plus - offering premium specs with an affordable price tag. Yet to truly make a mark, you need a fan-base of ardent followers who are actively engaged with the brand and Honor is adopting this strategy in a bid to challenge the established brands. At last week's 100 Days of Honor event in London which saw the Honor Holly launched in Europe with a unique fan-first pricing structure, we spoke with Honor Vice President of Handsets, Lars Weisswange, for a few minutes about the brand, marketing strategy and the fan-first approach. In the following, my questions are represented by NG and Lars' responses by LW. [Quotes in italic] describe his reactions to my questioning. NG: How is Honor aiming to change the perception of the Huawei brand in Western Europe or is it being treated as a separate brand? LW: From a [Go To Market] approach, it’s a separate brand. You ...
