Huawei introduced Mate 10 Pro and Porsche Design Mate 10 smartphones at an event in Germany back in October last year and the phone rolled out in November in several countries. At the CES 2018 the company announced that both the phones will be available int the U.S. from February. The company also announced that it has signed popular actress Gal Gadot as the company’s first Chief Experience Officer.

TCL at the CES 2018 introduced three smartphones Alcatel 1X, Alcatel 3V and Alcatel 5 under new Alcatel 1, 3 and 5 series, after a recent leak. All these have 18:9 full view displays from TCL and feature a fingerprint sensor on the back.
The Alcatel 1X is the most affordable of the lot that comes with an unibody design and the company says that it is made of premium materials. In addition to 18:9 full view display and fingerprint sensor, it also has face unlocking. It has soft, almost sandpaper-like texture on its curved back.
The Alcatel 3V has dual rear cameras with rounded rectangle shaped design and glossy back.
The Alcatel 5 is again a rectangular phone v with taller bezel up top that houses dual front cameras along with flash. The back has a subtly ridged texture.
The company just said that it uses Qualcomm and MediaTek processors for the series without giving and another specifications of them, which will be revealed next month, probably at the MWC 2018.

OnePlus introduced the Lava Red edition of the OnePlus 5T smartphone in China back in November. Today it has launched the new color variant of the smartphone in India. This has black bezel on the front and comes with bright red finish on the back and the sides of the phone. It recently launched the 5T Star Wars edition in India and introduced the 5T Sandstone White Limited Edition for global markets last week.

Sony at the CES 2018 announced the MP-CD1 ultra-portable Mobile Projector. The projector which can easily fit in your palm can project up to up to 120 inches in size from a short distance of 3.5m and weighs just 281 grams and measures 83.0 mm x 16.0 mm x 150.0 mm.
The Sony MP-CD1 ultra-portable Mobile Projector's vibrant display uses Texas Instruments’ DLP IntelliBright technology which employs advanced image processing algorithms to boost brightness without compromising on battery consumption. Earlier this week Huawei’s Honor brand announced that it will launch a new smartphone with dual front and rear cameras in India this month. Now Honor and Flipkart have confirmed that it is indeed the Honor 9 Lite and the phone will be launched exclusively on Flipkart.

Xiaomi already sells standard 5V-2A charger in India. Today is has launched new Qualcomm certified Quick Charge 3.0 charger in the country. This is compatible with Xiaomi own Mi MIX 2 and Mi Max 2 smartphones as well as Qualcomm's latest two-way fast charging power banks that are Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 certified.
It has power output of 5V-3A/9V-2A/12V-1.5A and can withstand voltage surges up to 380V, similar to chargers that come bundled with its latest Mi A1, Redmi Y1, Redmi 5A and other smartphones. It also has automatic temperature control that keeps the charger below 30-degrees while in use to prevent over heating, says Xiaomi.
The Xiaomi Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 Charger comes only in Black color, is priced at Rs. 449 and is available for purchase at mi.com. This is just Rs. 100 more than its standard 5V-2A charge. It doesn't come with a USB cable in the box.

TagStation today announced that Samsung has extended its support to NextRadio to unlock FM chips in upcoming phones launched USA and Canada. The company pointed out that FM Radio is still essential in some parts of the world especially when cellular coverage is congested or unavailable.
Smartphones launching these days come with a hardware that is capable of receiving free FM radio signals, and Samsung is the new OEM to take steps in bringing phones with unlocked FM chips. This will allow users to connect directly with the NextRadio app, listen to their favorite local stations, and use less battery and less data than streaming radio apps.
Samsung joins the list which also includes recently joined LG, Motorola, and Alcatel. Though the company claims that upcoming Samsung phones will launch with unlocked FM chips, reports suggest there are already plenty of phones on the market with unlocked chips, including the Galaxy S7, S8, Note 8 and more .

Meltdown and Spectre are most talked about security vulnerabilities in the recent times that affected most Intel, AMD, and ARM chipsets. Biggies like Microsoft, Intel, Google have already fixed and progressing towards fixing. Today Google has published a list of Chromebooks that are affected but are now patched.
The company has posted the table on Chromium Wiki of which majority of the models are already safe, or weren't affected Meltdown, to begin with. However, the tablet also shows the models with “EoL” tag which meaning 'End of Life', for such models, the update is never coming as they are no longer supported. Meltdown mostly affects Intel processors, so the and Intel-based Chromebooks are safe.
But fixing Spectre is far more complicated, however, Chrome's optional Site Isolation feature can do the job in most cases and this can be turned on by switching the #enable-site-per-process flag. You can check the complete list of Chromebook from the Wiki page, and If your model has "Yes" or "Not Needed" in the "mitigations (KPTI) on M63" column, then you have nothing to worry about.

Google is out with Android distribution numbers for the month of December and the Oreo adoption now hit rate to 0.7%, which also includes the recently rolled out Android 8.1 Oreo as well.
The Oreo adoption is now 0.7% which is 0.2% increase from last month. The Nougat (Android 7.0 and Android 7.1 Nougat) adoption rate has now jumped to 26.3% from 23.3% in November which is a steady growth. Android 6.0 Marshmallow adoption rate has again fallen and is now at 28.6% down from 29.7%. The Lollipop operating system adoption now stands at 25.1%, which is again down from 26.3%.
The KitKat OS now stands at 12.8% down from 13.4% which is a fairly decent downfall. Though the operating system is now outdated, Jellybean is currently at 5.6% down from 5.9%. Gingerbread and Ice cream sandwich constantly are at 0.4% and 0.5% respectively. Like always all the data is collected before the 7-day period ending on January 8th, 2017, according to Google.

By now it is known that LG is planning on rebranding its G-series flagships to change its strategy and better compete with Samsung and Apple. Now the company has trademarked the 'Icon' for smartphone and 'Iconic' for smartwatches according to the database of European Union Intellectual Property Office.
While LG might not be using the Icon series flagships right away, it intends to save it for a later date. Along with Icon, the company also trademarked LG Aicon, and LG Aiconn. That's not it, LG has also filed to trademark the name LG Iconic for a smartwatch. Brands often file trademarks but that doesn't necessarily mean they will be using it. In the case of Icon and Iconic, both these names sound really interesting for flagship high-end phones and smartwatches.
This change is very much needed for LG considering the downfall of its smartphone biz which has been posting losses for 11 straight quarters. While rebranding wouldn't change things as the company needs to focus on their promotional strategies, its a start for now.

OnePlus in an interview with CNET has just confirmed that it will begin talks with U.S carriers to break into the mainstream. The company's Pete Lau said that it is the right time and opportunity for OnePlus to scale up and also mentioned that the next OnePlus flagship to go official towards the end of Q2, which is sometime in June.
A potential deal with carriers in the US would put the company is the big radar and would bring the company a higher-profile distribution partner and better sales. OnePlus 5T is the fastest- and best-selling product since its launch in November, while OnePlus 5 is the previous best selling model claims Pei.

Intel today announced that the security patch fixing Meltdown and Spectre patches incurring 6% performance drop in most modern CPUs while the impact is bigger on older chipsets. The company further says that performance impact should not be significant for average computer users.
Intel added that it didn't receive any reports of the exploits obtaining customer data, but said that it will continue to patch things. The performance impact of the mitigation on 8th generation platforms (Kaby Lake, Coffee Lake) with SSDs is small across a variety of workloads and the expected impact is less than 6%, but in some cases, the impact might vary up to 10% depending on the nature of use cases.
The performance impact on 7th generationGen Kaby Lake-H mobile platforms is close to 8th with 7% drop on the SYSMark2014SE benchmark. As for the 6th generation Skylake-S platform, the impact might be slightly higher ranging from 7% to 8%, but mostly in-line with 7th and 8th generation platforms said Intel.

HMD Global just trademarked "Asha" with the EU Intellectual Property Office. Asha is the Nokia's former feature phone line-up with a touchscreen display and support for services like Facebook, WhatsApp and Twitter.
Nokia's Asha series, compact smartphone-like phones with attractive designs were the cheapest alternatives to the actual smartphones back in the day, but it wasn't a great success for Nokia compared to their smartphones. We hope HMD wouldn't go the similar feature phone route with Asha series, For one, the new application specifically mentions that "Asha" can be used for smartphones which confirms that the series would indeed include smartphones.

Microsoft has teamed up with Signal; a protocol for the private messenger to bring an experimental feature called 'Private Conversations' with end-to-end encryption on Skype app. However, the end-to-end encryption is only available between one-on-one contacts but not in group chats.
The end-to-end encryption feature will cover chat, files, and audio messages, but not audio or video calls. The private conversations feature is an additional layer of security for conversations since already offers some degree of encryption to protects chats. To start a private conversation, users need to click the '+' and select New Private Conversation and chose the contact with whom you'd like to start the Private Conversation with.
An invitation will be sent to your contact asking to accept your invitation which is valid for 7 days. Once the contact accepts the invitation, you can start having a conversation. However, the chat will be available on that specific device and If you'd like to move the conversation to a different device, you would need to resend the invitation.

We're just a month away from the launch of the Galaxy S9 and S9+. While the company is busy at work, retail box of the Galaxy S9 has allegedly surfaced online. The retail box found by Reddit users reveal some basic yet key specifications of the S9 that should keep us excited till the launch which happens to be in February at the MWC 2018 event.
As rumored, the Galaxy S9 will sport a 5.8-inches curved-edge Super AMOLED Infinity display with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection. HTC confirmed Android 8.0 (Oreo) update for some of its devices back in August last year. The HTC U11 was the first phone to get the Oreo update in November starting from Taiwan, later the U11 Life got the update, now the unlocked HTC 10 units have started receiving the update starting from the U.S.
Android Oreo comes with lots of new features and improvements including Background limits, Notification channels, snooze notifications, Autofill APIs, Picture in Picture (PIP) display, Adaptive icons and much more.
The v3.16.617.2 for the HTC 10 also includes Android security patch for December, 2017. OTA update should roll out for unlocked units in the U.S. from today, but the RUU file is available, which you can download and manually flash at your own risk.
No details when the T-Mobile and other carriers variants will get the update. European units should get the update later this month or early next month. HTC U Ultra is expected to get the Oreo update next as the company had already promised.
