Lenovo has announced a recall of 83,500 (78,000 in the U.S. and 5,500 in Canada) ThinkPad X1 Carbon 5th Generation laptops (with machine type  20HQ, 20HR, 20K3 or 20K4), manufactured between December 2016 and October 2017 over concerns of  fire hazard. It said that it has worked with United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) for voluntary recall of these laptops. Lenovo said that it has received three customer reports worldwide of an overheat condition related to an unfastened screw which resulted in damage to the customer's laptops, but it has not received reports of fire or damage to persons or property, other than to the laptop PCs. On  investigation and analysis it has found out that an unfastened, small screw, left in the unit during manufacture, could damage the surface of the lithium ion polymer battery and cause a short, leading to rapid cell discharge of the battery. This defect was the reason for three failures. It also said that the recall is due to a manufacturing process lapse which Lenovo’s engineers have subsequently fixed. "Having taken the time to fully understand and correct this manufacturing issue, Lenovo is fully confident that its current ThinkPad X1 Carbon laptops meet Lenovo’s high quality and safety standards," said Lenovo. Check for update button on Android does nothing expecting for manually checking for updates in case you haven't got an update notification automatically. However, back in September manually pushing the check for button update on Nexus and Pixel phones would fetch an available update even if the background check wouldn't.  However, an update to Google Play Services has broken the feature, and it was reported that the function would return only in 2018. Now since it is 2018, the feature is back again working on the said phones. The v12.2.09  beta that rolled out yesterday is said to have fixed the button, and it was successfully fetching the available updates when checked manually. The feature's return was spotted first spotted on Reddit, and since it is only limited to Pixel and Nexus series, it was working on first gen and second generation Pixel smartphones. You can test out the Google  Play Services 12.2.09 by signing up for the beta on Play Store or manually download the  APK and side-load it. So after installing the latest APK, if you are in the January security update, you can try checking for February security patch which was rolled out earlier this week. Source | Via

If reports are to be trusted, Google might be working on game streaming service 'Yeti" which also includes a console and controller to take on NVIDA and Sony. The new gaming service would work either on Chromecast or a Google-made console which is currently under development.  The service that currently code-named Yeti is aimed at putting Google in a commendable place in the video game business and to let users play games while streaming rather than downloading to disks and digitally. The gaming service will involve Google's cloud service to broadcast the games to users over the internet. Though Google said to have discussed its plans with game developers, it needs to be seen who or anyone of them would develop a game dedicated to Yeti or make a Yeti version of the games that are already available. Google's recent hiring of Phil Harrison, who is a longtime video game industry veteran indicates the company plans on entering the video game business which is currently on the rise. Considering the huge amount of revenue generated by Google from Play via advertising, it needs to be seen how Google is planning on monetizing the service when it launches. Source | Via

Indian Antitrust watchdog has fined Google a Rs.135.86 ($21.17 million) over “search bias” and abuse of its dominant position. Competition Commission of India (CCI) says that Google; a part of Alphabet is abusing its dominance in online web search and online advertising markets. Furthermore, CCI said that it did not find any actions from Google’s that oppose the specialized search design, AdWords, and online distribution agreements. Commenting on the same, a Google spokesperson said that the company is reviewing the “narrow concerns” identified by the Commission and will assess its next step. Last year, the European Commission imposed a record 2.4 billion euro ($3 billion) fine on the company for somewhat similar where the company was found favoring its shopping service and demoting rival offerings. Google has appealed against the order. However, Google is found guilty of placing its commercial flight search function at a position that is favorable to it on the search results page which indirectly is causing damage to the businesses trying to gain market access. This ruling also put an end to the probe that was first started by the watchdog in 2012 based on the complaints filed by Bharat Matrimony; a matchmaking website and a not-for-profit organization, Consumer Unity and Trust Society (CUTS). Google just announced that from starting July it will mark all HTTP sites as 'not secure' with an aim to offer secure browsing. Starting with Chrome 68, the search engine giant will show all the non-HTTPS sites as not secure for browsing. This isn't surprising since Google already shows the HTTP sites with text fields as insecure when you enter any information. The company also says that over 68% of Chrome traffic on both Android and Windows, over 78% Chrome traffic on both Chrome OS and Mac and 81 of the top 100 sites on the web use HTTPS by default and are now protected. For years HTTPS was regarded as a requirement for sites handling critical information, like bank portals. But since the last couple of years, regular sites gaining traction with HTTPS thanks to the availability of free SSL/TLS certificates and even browsers started encouraging the shift. Google said that Chrome is dedicated to making it easy to setup HTTP sites to migrate to HTTPS. The Mixed content audits are now available to help developers migrate their sites to HTTPS in the latest Node CLI version of Lighthouse which is an automated tool for improving web pages. The lighthouse audit will help developers to find which resources a site loads using HTTP, and which ...
