According to industry analysts, TSMC said to remain as Apple's contract chip maker next year, as the exclusive supplier of "A13" chips for 2019 iPhones. TSMC has been Apple's exclusive supplier of A-series chips since 2016. It also remains a partner for A10 and A11 Bionic chip for iPhone 7 and iPhone 8 series, and iPhone X. Extending the contract, Apple is likely to retain TSMC as the exclusive supplier of the "A12" chip in 2018 iPhones. TSMC's offering is widely considered to be superior to other chipmakers, including Samsung and Intel. So, this new piece of information doesn't come as a surprise. Going by the technology, the company kept refining it over the years as the A10 Fusion is 16nm, A11 Bionic is 10nm, and this year's "A12" is expected to be a 7nm chip. The upcoming A13 will likely remain as a 7nm+ chip with extreme ultraviolet lithography (EUV). The production is expected to begin in the second quarter of 2019, in time for a fall iPhone launch next year. TSMC recently confirmed its plans to invest $25 billion towards volume production of 5nm chips by 2020. TSMC partnership with Apple takes a big toll on Samsung which was the exclusive manufacturer of iPhone processors for many years.  TSMC ...

Australian Government  has banned Chinese telecoms firm Huawei Technologies from supplying equipment for a 5G mobile network as it is citing the risk of foreign interference and hacking. However, Beijing dismissed saying it as an“excuse” to tilt the playing field against a Chinese firm. We have been informed by the Govt that Huawei & ZTE have been banned from providing 5G technology to Australia. This is a extremely disappointing result for consumers. Huawei is a world leader in 5G. Has safely & securely delivered wireless technology in Aust for close to 15 yrs — Huawei Australia (@HuaweiOZ) August 22, 2018 This move comes following the advice from security agencies, signaling the stance toward its biggest trading partner as relations have soured over Canberra’s allegations of Chinese meddling in Australian politics. This move also brings Australia in line with the United States, which has restricted Huawei and ZTE Corp. Furthermore, the government in an emailed statement said that national security regulations that are usually applied to telecom carriers would now be extended to equipment suppliers. Firms “who are likely to be subject to extrajudicial directions from a foreign government would leave the nation’s network vulnerable to unauthorized access or interference, and presented a security risk." Future iPhones and Apple Watches said to use new power-saving Backplane technology to extend battery life

$

Apple is said to be in plans to adopt a new power-saving backplane technology for the upcoming iPhone and Apple Watch displays with an to contribute to longer battery life, according to research firm IHS Markit. The backplane technology is responsible for turning individual pixels on and off and it plays a significant role in determining a display's resolution, refresh rate, and power consumption. Currently, OLED displays in smartphones use LTPS TFT, or low-temperature polysilicon thin-film transistors, as the standard backplane technology. However, things might in the future and Apple switch to LTPO TFT, or low-temperature polycrystalline oxide. Kept in theory, LTPO can save 5-15% in power consumption versus LTPS, resulting in extended battery life on future iPhones. The report says that LTPO has an Oxide TFT structure that can reduce the power leakage of LTPS. Apple might also develop LTPO technology to gain more control over components of OLED displays. The company currently sources flexible OLED panels exclusively from Samsung, but LG might soon become their number two choice and Apple might require both the companies to look into LTPO. Similar fashion, it might ask display manufacturers to start deploying LTPO first on the Apple Watch and then gradually introduce it in the iPhone display ...

Samsung is working on its next Galaxy S flagship smartphone purportedly called as Galaxy S10. As per the recent report, the Samsung is expected to adopt the in-display fingerprint scanner for its next and scheduled flagship device for 2019 launch. If the rumors circulating on the Internet turns out to be true, then we can presume all the three variants of Galaxy S10 will be equipped with technology that allows users to scan their fingerprint on the screen. Furthermore, Qualcomm will be supplying the ultrasonic fingerprint sensor for the S10 lineup, rumored earlier. The ultrasonic fingerprint technology creates a 3D mapped fingerprint used by an optical scanner, which indeed boasts more accuracy than traditional ones. It's worth mentioning here that Samsung planned to implement optical in-screen fingerprint sensors developed by Synaptics for its Galaxy S8, but dropped later due to some issues. Having said that, Chinese handset makers like Vivo and Honor have  already launched smartphones with in-display fingerprint and ultrasonic fingerprint scanners, respectively. Also, some analyst predicts the in-display fingerprint scanners could be the next big thing in the overall smartphone market in 2019. The IHS Markit, a market research firm anticipates the shipments will hit 100 million next year with smartphones ...
