Microsoft to disable TLS 1.0, 1.1 for Edge and Internet Explorer in first-half of 2020

0
Microsoft has announced it will be disabling 'Transport Layer Security' (TLS) 1.0 and 1.1 by default in supported versions of Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer 11 in the first half of 2020. This change is in line with announcements from Apple, Google, and Mozilla to supports more performant, secure connections. January 2019 marks the 20th anniversary of TLS 1.0 that encrypts and authenticates secure connections across the web. The successor versions of TLS have grown more advanced, culminating with the publication of TLS 1.3, which is currently in development for a future version of Microsoft Edge. The company says that moving to newer versions helps ensure a more secure Web for everyone. Additionally, it expects the IETF to formally deprecate TLS 1.0 and 1.1 later this year, at which point protocol vulnerabilities in these versions will no longer be addressed by the IETF. The newer versions enable more modern cryptography and are broadly supported across modern browsers. The company says that most sites should not be impacted by this change and is allowing the small portion of remaining sites sufficient time to upgrade to a newer version. Source

Qualcomm Technologies has announced 60GHz Wi-Fi chipsets; the QCA64x8 and QCA64x1 that are capable of delivering 10+ gigabit-per-second (Gbps) network speeds and wire-equivalent latency, while setting the industry low-power benchmark for extended device battery life. Qualcomm Technologies’ 60GHz Wi-Fi portfolio meets challenging demands while harnessing unique capabilities that support new 60GHz Wi-Fi Sensing applications like proximity and presence detection, gesture recognition, room mapping with precise location and improved facial feature detection. Qualcomm Technologies is the first-to-market with a 60GHz Wi-Fi solution with optimizations based on the 802.11ay specification. Qualcomm Technologies’ industry-first family of 11ay 60GHz Wi-Fi chipsets includes QCA6438 and QCA6428 for infrastructure and fixed wireless access and the QCA6421 and QCA6431 for mobile applications. To remind you, earlier this year, Qualcomm and Facebook announced they are working together to deliver high-speed internet connectivity with Facebook’s Terragraph technology through the development of a multi-node wireless system based on the QCA6438 and QCA6428 chipsets. The mmWave-based 60GHz Wi-Fi is a low interference, bandwidth-rich spectrum that delivers increased wireless capacity, multi-gigabit speeds, and ultra-low latency. This makes the 60GHz Wi-Fi ideally suited across a wide range of wireless ecosystems spanning mobile, enterprise, outdoor backhaul, and the smart home. Networking and mobile devices can take advantage of ...

Google to charge smartphone manufacturers in Europe for using its app suite

0

Back in July European Commision has fined Google with $5.04 billion for misusing its position and forcing its apps on Android manufacturers. While Google appealed the decision last week, it is also working on how to comply with the decision. Firstly, Google is updating the compatibility agreements with mobile device makers that set out how Android is used to develop smartphones and tablets. The company, going forward, Android partners who are wishing to distribute Google apps may also build non-compatible, or forked, smartphones and tablets for the European Economic Area (EEA). Next, device manufacturers will be able to license the Google mobile application suite separately from the Google Search App or the Chrome browser. Since pre-installation of Google Search and Chrome together with other apps helped fund the development and free distribution of Android, Google will start charging a licensing fee for the Play Store and other Google apps for the first time. However, confirmed that Android would remain free and open source. Lastly, Google also mentioned that it would offer separate licenses to the Google Search app and Chrome. The company mentioned that it will also offer new commercial agreements to partners for the non-exclusive pre-installation and placement of Google Search and Chrome. These new licensing options will ...

Samsung has announced that it will acquire Zhilabs, known for its Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based network and service analytics, to further enhance its 5G capabilities. This will boost 5G offerings of automation and network analytics to finely tune the customer experiences in the 5G era. The company last month commited KRW 25 trillion investment over the next three years to acquire companies to boost artificial intelligence (AI), 5G, automotive electronics components and biopharmaceuticals. AI-based transformation can be used to analyze user traffic, classify application being used, and improve overall service quality, as such needs can no longer be addressed by existing solutions. Zhilabs, fully owned by Samsung, will operate independently under its own management. Samsung said that the joint capabilities will create new cutting-edge technology in the transformation from 4G to 5G. In addition to the acquisition, Samsung will continue to strengthen its automation solutions that measure the quality of each user service and can also automatically optimize service quality without human intervention. The company also plans to explore and invest in other business opportunities powered by the emerging technologies. Youngky Kim, President and Head of Networks Business at Samsung Electronics, said: 5G will enable unprecedented services attributed to the generation of exponential data traffic, for ...

Google Pixel 3 XL teardown reveals Samsung’s OLED display

Following the tradition, iFixit has performed a teardown of the Pixel 3 XL giving some insight into the phone's hardware. Interestingly, it is found that the Pixel 3 XL is using an OLED panel from Samsung. iFixit also mentioned that it is fairly difficult to open the Pixel 3 XL, due to copious amounts of foam adhesive. Internal components of the Pixel 3 XL include 4GB of LPDDR4X DRAM from Micron, 64GB of Skhynix flash storage, the Pixel Visual Core, the Google Titan M security chip, and a Qi wireless charging receiver from IDT. Other components from Qualcomm, including the main Snapdragon 845 processor, radios, and an audio codec chip. Following the epic backslash from last year's Pixel 2 XL display, Google seems to be playing safe by going with Samsung panel despite investing in LG display. However, replacing a Pixel 3 screen will be tricky, and will most likely require replacing the whole frame of the phone. iFixit says that the vibration motor on the Pixel 3 XL is said to be improved from last year, capable of providing more precise haptic feedback.  The Pixel 2 XL rear glass covered 20% of the phone, while it is 100% crackable on the Pixel 3 ...

Google Chrome 70 brings Web Authentication API, PWAs on Windows, AV1 decoder and more

Google has rolled out the Chrome 70 for Windows, Mac, and Linux. This update brings an option to disable linking Google site and Chrome sign-ins, Progressive Web Apps on Windows, the ability for users to restrict extensions’ access to a custom list of sites, an AV1 decoder, and much more. Google with Chrome 69, tried to “simplify” how it handles Google site sign-ins by also signing you into Chrome with the same account. If you sign out, whether from Chrome or from any Google site, you’re signed out of both. This led to a massive outcry from Chrome users and this Chrome 70 is making some changes including an option that allows users to turn off linking web-based sign-in with browser-based sign-in. If you disable this feature, signing into a Google site will not sign you into Chrome. An update to the user interfaces to better communicate a user’s sync state and instead of keeping the Google auth cookies to allow you to stay signed in after cookies are cleared, the browser will once again delete all cookies. While these are certainly an improvement, it still doesn't solve the automatic sign-in concern. The Chrome 70 now supports Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) on Windows. These apps can launch from the ...
