Amazon has signed a deal with Apple to expand the company's products on its site worldwide. Amazon confirmed that it will soon start selling more Apple products directly and this will also include the latest iPad Pro, iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and Apple Watch Series 4, as well as Apple's lineup of Beats headphones. The Amazon-Apple deal is available in US, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Japan, and India.
Only Apple-authorized resellers will now be allowed to sell Apple and Beat products on Amazon's marketplace. Amazon currently sells some Apple devices such as MacBook laptops and Beats headphones. With the new deal, customers should expect to see a greater selection of new Apple products and at standard prices. The agreement also points to relations between the two tech giants improving, after Amazon removed Apple TV in 2015, then brought the devices back last year.
However, it does not include Apple's HomePod smart speaker. Independent sellers with Apple inventory in Amazon warehouses after Jan. 4 will have to remove the products with Amazon offering to reimburse return or disposal fees until early February. Those sellers won't be able to ship more Apple products to Amazon warehouses starting Dec. 1.

Apple is rumored to be working on a pair of over-the-ear headphones, while the details regarding the product were pretty slim so far, a newly granted patent titled “System and method for automatic right-left ear detection for headphones,” reveals what Apple might be planning. The patent describes a pair of headphones that would be reversible, automatically adjusting which ear cup is the right or left based on how you put them on.
The patent further reveals that the headphones ear cups would have five microphones on it that are used to determine which ear cup is which through a variety of complicated methods involving comparing relative microphone inputs. Once the headphones have determined their placement, the headphones could use those mic arrays to pull off something similar to the HomePod, using one mic to capture your voice and a second one to cancel out background noise so that you can be clearly heard.
The patent only focuses on a technology that can be used to determine which ear cup is on your right ear for voice detection. But, presumably, Apple could apply the reversible nature to play back the proper right / left stereo signals to the proper ear once it’s already established which ...

Intel has finally announced the XMM 8160 5G modem that is aimed at providing 5G connectivity to phones, PCs and broadband access gateways. The XMM 8160 5G will support peak speeds up to 6 gigabits per second, making it three to six times faster than the latest LTE modems. The company confirmed that it will be available in the second half of 2019.
The Intel XMM 8160 is a multimode modem, meaning it will support the new standard for 5G New Radio (NR), including standalone (SA) and non-standalone (NSA) modes, as well as 4G, 3G and 2G legacy radios in a single chipset. With single-chip multimode baseband capability, the Intel XMM 8160 5G modem will enable device manufacturers to design smaller and more power-efficient devices.
Since it is advancing directly to a multimode solution, Intel will offer very clear improvements in power, size, and scalability. Intel’s integrated multimode solution supports simultaneous connectivity (EN-DC) for LTE and 5G – critical as 5G mobile network devices must be backward compatible to 4G if 5G is not available at any moment or at any location.
The modem offers support for new millimeter wave (mmWave) spectrum as well as sub 6GHz 5G NR support and download speeds up ...

In the latest research note, Ming-Chi Kuo has cut his shipping estimates for the iPhone XR due to several factors. This might the result of the higher demand for the iPhone XS and the older models. He is reducing his iPhone shipment forecasts by 15–20% for the first quarter of 2019. This news falls in line with reports of Apple canceling additional production of iPhone XR owing to poor reception.
Kuo believes that iPhone shipments for the current quarter will be in the same 75–80 million range he previously predicted. However, he has lowered his first-quarter estimate to 47–52 million from a previous range of 55–60 million. Given that he has raised his early iPhone XR estimate a month ago and cited stronger demand seen for the iPhone 8 last year with the potential for more stable demand over time, this new estimate is surprising.
This drop in estimation also comes owing to the competition from Huawei's Mate 20 series. Kuo has reduced the iPhone XR shipment estimations for Q4 2018, Q1 2019, and Q2 2019 by 30–35%, 25–30%, and 25–30% to 30–35, 20–25, and 10–15mn units, respectively.
In the latest research note, Kuo said:
We have reduced our iPhone XR shipment estimation from 100mn units to 70mn ...

With an aim to help web developers optimize their web pages, Google's Chrome Labs has released a new web tool called Squoosh that can downsize, compress, and reformat images. Squoosh’s top priority is speed and the demo showcases the improvements and new capabilities to Chrome.
It supports a variety of web formats like MozJPEG and WebP and traditional ones like PNG and allows you to quickly make your images web-ready. The app was able to do a visual comparison of the original image and its compressed counterpart, so it is easy to understand the pros and cons of each format.
The app can work offline and performs all of its work within the browser itself. Google says that Squoosh has the ability to offer consistent smooth UI even when the app is working on a taxing resize or conversion. Squoosh.app is now available for all major browsers including mobile and, quite obviously, it works best on Chrome. You can access it at Squoosh.app.
