Google silently acquired Q&A startup Superpod for $60 million

Google has acquired Superpod which is a startup that had built a question-and-answer mobile app, according to reports. Google said to have paid the firm less than $60 million to acquire founders and purchase some of Superpod's assets. Google hasn't backed out in showing off its ambitions for Assistant; its voice-assistant that debuted in 2016. Superpod which lets users ask questions and receive answers from experts could help Google boost its virtual assistant’s ability to answer users’ questions. A Google spokesperson confirmed that Superpod’s founders have joined the company. However, declined to comment further about the deal. Superpod shut down its app in September. Superpod.io which is formerly known as Sparks was founded by ex-Google employees Sophia Yang and William Li in 2016. The firm has raised an undisclosed amount of seed funding from Precursor Ventures, Charlie Cheever, Social Capital, and the House Fund. Source

In less than couple of weeks after rolling out an update, ASUS has started rolling out another update for the Zenfone Max Pro M2 smartphone that brings several fixes camera interface and text translation optimization, and improves to reduction on FM Radio,  however it is yet to receive AI camera features. The company has also rolled out an update to Max M2 that brings EIS support for the front camera, as it had promised at the launch. Sony Electronics has announced the new MASTER Series Z9G 8K LCD and A9G 4K OLED televisions. Both new models feature the latest generation Picture Processor X1 Ultimate for accurate detail and contrast. The company also introduced the HT-X8500 Soundbar which comes with Dolby Atmos/DTS:X and built-in subwoofers and the new HT-S350 Soundbar.  The Picture Processor X1 Ultimate algorithm is specially developed for 8K that can intelligently detect and analyze each object in the picture, resulting in exceptional detail and contrast for a more realistic picture that represents. Samsung earnings guidance and LG preliminary earnings reveal profit drop in Q4 2018

Samsung and LG, two Korean giants today reported earnings guidance for the fourth quarter of 2018. Both the companies have reported drop in profits for the quarter. Samsung has reported revene of 59 trillion Korean won in Q4 2018, compared to 66 trillion Korean won a year ago, and an operating profit of 10.8 trillion Korean won, compared to 15.1 trillion Korean won YoY. Samsung blames difficult conditions in memory chips, weaker-than-expected demand from data centre customers adjusting inventories drove down chip prices. LG has reported KRW 15.8 trillion revenues in the fourth quarter of 2018, compared to KRW 16.9 trillion in the previous year, with an operating profit of KRW 75.3 billion, compared to KRW 366.8 billion, down 79.47% YoY. LG blames continued poor performance in mobile division, which has been posting losses since Q2 2017. Both Samsung and LG did not announce the performance of each business division. Sony has announced an all new music experience at the CES 2019; the "360 Reality Audio"  which makes listeners feel as if they are immersed in sound from all directions. Intel at the CES 2019 announced Ice Lake, next-generation 10nm PC platofrm, Project Athena, an innovation program to deliver a new class of advanced laptops with 5G and artificial intelligence, and previewed a new client platform code-named Lakefield. The Intel 'Ice Lake' mobile PC platform will be the company's first volume 10nm processor built on Intel’s new Sunny Cove CPU microarchitecture detailed last month. Ice Lake is the first platform to feature the all-new Gen11 integrated graphics architecture, support Intel Adaptive Sync technology, enabling smooth frame rates and capable of more than 1 TFLOP of performance for richer gaming and creation experience. It is also the first to integrate Thunderbolt 3 and the new high-speed Wi-Fi 6, based on the 802.11ax standard w as a built-in technology, as well as feature Intel DL Boost instruction sets to accelerate artificial intelligence (AI) workloads.
