According to Apple's operating chief COO Jeff Williams testimony in the ongoing legal battle with Qualcomm, the company wanted to use Qualcomm's 4G LTE modems in its newest iPhones, but the chipmaker wouldn't sell to it. This had a major effect on how quickly Apple can make the shift to 5G.  Qualcomm, however, continues to provide Apple with chips for its older iPhones, including the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, Apple COO Jeff Williams said during the US Federal Trade Commission's trial against Qualcomm. However, the San Diego chipmaker won't provide Apple with modems for the newest iPhones since both the companies began their fight over patents. Jeff Williams believes the royalty rate Apple paid for using Qualcomm patents $7.50 per iPhone is too high. The FTC has accused Qualcomm of operating a monopoly in wireless chips, forcing customers including Apple to work with it exclusively and charging excessive licensing fees for its technology. FTC has also said that Qualcomm forced Apple to pay licensing fees for its technology in exchange for using its chips in iPhones. The trial started on Jan. 4 in US District Court in San Jose, California. Testimony covers negotiations and events that occurred before March 2018. Apple relies on third-party chips for network connectivity. Qualcomm has been the sole supplier for iPhones ...

Gboard v7.9 update brings support for more languages, predictive search; hints at new Emoticons, and more

Google's Gboard is getting a new update bringing few visible changes on the surface and few tweaks from the inside. The update hints at a new and larger batch of emoticons are coming to Gboard. It also looks like Gboard might get the ability to send its own stickers to Whatsapp using WEBP format. Gboard has added as many as fourteen different categories for emoticons, some containing as few as two emoticons and another coming in with twenty-four. However, you will find a lot of similar common themes in emoji including expressions, animals, and utility emoticons like pointers. Emoticons are made up of a few symbols from various languages that form a picture. When these are enabled, the categories will appear in the symbol keyboard. It looks like Gboard might be working on integration with WhatsApp to display IM platform's own stickers, or maybe for sending Gboard's own stickers to Whatsapp using the more efficient WEBP format. But nothing yet is confirmed or official, so it is just a guessing game at the moment. Gboard's 'Make a GIF' feature may be testing output in MP4 format, and this probably will make videos smaller and look better than they would in a standard animated GIF format. ...

Apple is en route to launch three new iPhones in 2019 and it is already known that the high-end model is expected to pack triple-rear cameras at the back. Adding to the existing rumors, a new set of leaked renders showcase the 2019 high-end iPhone variant with the triple rear cameras that are arranged horizontally instead of vertically.  Based on the renders of the iPhone (2019); the device could retain a similar front body as the current iPhone but will have a smaller notch and slightly thinner bezels. As said, the big difference in terms of design is on the rear where the triple camera setup is horizontally stacked at the center. It has three camera sensors, circle flash around the center camera lens and there is a microphone below the center camera. The volume rocker is placed on the left along with silent switch. The power button is situated on the right. All is not good since the last leaked render showcased different rear-camera setup. One with Mate 20 like the square setup and the new one with the horizontal arrangement. As the 2019 iPhones are still in the very early production process, nothing is confirmed yet but both leaks are 100% ...
