Microsoft has announced that it will end support for Windows 10 Mobile devices on December, falling in-line with company's announcement in 2017 when it revealed that won’t be developing new features or hardware for Windows 10 Mobile. However, the company continued to offer security and software updates. The company will continue offering security updates till December 10th 2019 for the devices running Windows 10 Mobile. "Windows 10 Mobile, version 1709 (released October 2017) is the last release of Windows 10 Mobile and Microsoft will end support on December 10, 2019," said the company. Microsoft is now recommending that Windows 10 Mobile users move to iOS or Android devices. After Microsoft pulls support in December, device backups for settings and some apps will continue for three months until March 10th, 2020. "Some services including photo uploads and restoring a device from an existing device backup may continue to work for up to another 12 months from the end of support," said Microsoft. Microsoft previously ended Windows Phone 8.1 support on July 11th, 2017, so the end of Windows 10 Mobile support is not surprising. Microsoft is currently focusing its energy on building apps and services for iOS and Android. Source | Via

Samsung Pay app confirms in-display fingerprint scanner on at least one Galaxy S10 model

Samsung has been working on the Galaxy S10 flagships for months now, and we are almost there to witness the global launch of the flagships in February. We've learned many details about the flagships including the display sizes, cameras, animations, display cutouts, night-mode, and much more from Samsung’s software updates. Latest to join the list is that at least of the flagship will have an in-display fingerprint sensor. After OnePlus 6T which was the first smartphone with an in-display fingerprint sensor, Samsung Galaxy S10 might be the next. Synaptics and Vivo partnered to release the first commercially available smartphone with an in-display fingerprint scanner in 2018. In a tear down of the latest Samsung Pay app, there were very explicit references to an in-display fingerprint scanner—and one reference directly mentions the Galaxy S10’s code-name. Both of these references are used for showing the payment authentication window in the Samsung Pay app or online payments on supported sites. The Samsung Pay app checks if the device has an in-display fingerprint scanner, and if so, it’ll shift the payment flow window at the bottom a bit higher up to make more room. Since all the rumored variants of the Galaxy S10 share the same code-name, it isn't clear which model of the Galaxy ...

What XOLO’s comeback tells us about Indian manufacturers

0

Where are the Indian smartphone manufacturers these days? Where have they gone? This question has been on my mind for a while. Brands like Micromax and Yu, Lava and XOLO have largely disappeared from the scene this past year or two. Our market is inundated with devices from Chinese manufacturers like Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo and Huawei, Taiwanese brands like ASUS and even Vietnamese brands like Mobiistar. Sure, there is an exception in Smartron, but largely, the Indian brands were nowhere to be seen in 2018. When XOLO invited me to their event, conveniently titled "A new era" where they launched two new devices, I was pleasantly surprised. Before checking the devices out, I had a quick chat with Sunil Raina from XOLO and I'd like to share what I thought about XOLO's comeback and what it tells us about Indian manufacturers. At the event, the first thing I got to know was that XOLO is still one of the very few Indian companies that has complete control over the entire chain of production from design to manufacturing. True to some extent, the devices are indeed manufactured in Lava's factory, Noida. I say some extent because there are several dependencies that are outside ...

Android Q said to bring more ways for carriers to SIM lock your phone

0
0
Android Q has been in the news for the past week and some of the changes include system-wide dark mode and new permissions settings. However, there seems to be a downside as the new code changes suggest that the network carriers will have more ability to lock your phone down to specific networks via your SIM card. Four commits were posted to various parts of Android's Gerrit source code management, entitled “Carrier restriction enhancements for Android Q.” In them, it is evident that the network carrier will have more fine-grained control over which networks devices will and will not work on. It will be possible list down “allowed” and “excluded” carriers. It is even possible to allow blocking virtual carrier networks that run on the same towers as your main carrier. Changes are also on the way for dual-SIM devices. At the moment, carriers can set individual restrictions for each SIM slot, but with Android Q, carriers will be able to lock out the second slot unless there’s an approved SIM card in the first slot. This SIM lock restriction is applied immediately and will persist through restarting the phone and even doing a factory reset. However, in both cases, emergency phone calls will still work as expected, ...

Google also said that it will make electoral information from the Election Commission of India and other authoritative sources easily discoverable on Search. Today’s updates are a step forward in this direction, and we will continue to invest in initiatives that build further on our commitment towards election transparency.

Google hit with $57 million GDPR penalty by french watchdog CNIL

0

CNIL has issued a penalty of $57 million against Google for violating Europe’s strict new data privacy laws. The agency accuses Google of not fully disclosing to users how their personal data is collected nor how the data is eventually used. It further accuses Google of not properly obtaining user consent for showing them personalized ads. This comes as an effect for violating Europe’s new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The GDPR is the world's first major attempt to regulate firms like Google, Facebook, Amazon, etc. It focuses these companies to examine their own policies surrounding user data collection. Though Google has made enough changes to its platform to align with the GDPR, the agency says that Google hasn’t done enough. Google states that it obtains the user’s consent to process the data for personalized ads. However, the restricted committee considers that the consent is not validly obtained for two reasons. First, user consent is not sufficiently informed. The information on processing operations for the ads personalization is diluted in several documents and does not enable the user to be aware of their extent. Then, the restricted committee observes that the collected consent is neither “specific” nor “unambiguous.” CNIL in a statement said: “the infringements observed deprive the users of essential guarantees regarding processing ...

Samsung Neuro Game Booster trademark hints at AI optimized gaming

0

According to a trademark application filed in the European Union, Samsung is said to be planning further AI-based optimization of games on the Galaxy S10 and other flagship devices. Going back in time, Samsung had introduced various AI-based features on the Galaxy Note9, including game optimization. With the next-generation hardware, the company is set to develop this further, given how the Exynos 9820 launch emphasized its massively improved NPU. A new European trademark application adds more weight to the speculations. Samsung has filed the paperwork for protection of the name Neuro Game Booster. The trademark’s description makes things very clear: ‘Software for smartphones; … Computer application software featuring games and gaming; Artificial intelligence software.‘ Though this application was filed with the European Union Intellectual Property Office, we expected the same trademark to surface in other parts of the world in the coming days or weeks. Samsung has not yet used the term to refer to any of its existing AI-optimization efforts. The timing of the new application suggests that we could see the Neuro Game Booster make its debut on February 20, at the launch of the Galaxy S10. Since there are other devices coming from Samsung in the first half of 2019, things might change. The Samsung ...

Apple’s 2020 iPhones said to adopt OLED display panels

Apple could drop LCD displays for its 2020 iPhones for the all-OLED line-up, according to a new report from the WSJ. This move would allow for more flexible handset design. However, this isn't the first time we are hearing such reports, but the new claim adds more weight to the speculation.  The new report suggests that Apple's LCD panel supplier Japan Display is seeking investor help that will put it on firmer ground before the switch to OLED-only iPhones takes place. This shift to OLED from LCD is said to be partly in response to the fewer sales of the iPhone XR. Reports also suggest that Apple has recently asked its partners to cut down on all iPhone production. Apple has also dropped the price of iPhone XR in China to try and spur additional sales. A report in May 2018 claimed that Apple's transition to a full OLED iPhone line-up would be completed in 2019, but analysts claim that the timeframe was likely inaccurate. Apple has also been working to boost its OLED display supply chain for diversification purposes and to cut down its reliance on Samsung. Apple has reportedly turned to LG Display to build out its OLED display production facilities and has even purchased equipment to build ...
