Samsung Huron Windows Phone 8.1 specifications leaked?

$

Samsung will still be making Windows Phones, if the previously leaked press image of its first Windows Phone 8.1 device is to be believed. Codenamed "Huron", the Samsung made Windows Phone will be a sequel to the ATIV S that coincided with the launch of WP8, the big reboot to Microsoft's fast growing platform. But Samsung hasn't announced any device since, so at this moment, this leak comes more as a surprise than the usual expected ones. Curiously though, the render, leaked by evleaks, shows off a device that looks exactly like the ATIV or a Galaxy, but misses the camera button on the side, which used to be mandatory for Windows Phone. And of course, the screen is "off" so we are not able to get a glimpse of Windows Phone 8.1 either, which evleaks claims the phone is running on. But there are more details. [HTML1] evleaks also revealed its model number earlier, which is SM-750W. Doing a quick search on the GFXBench site reveals that the phone is a mid range 720p device that has the Adreno 305 for graphics, unlike the full HD device we initially thought it would be. Rumoured to sport a 5 inch screen, the ...

Apple is usually the aggressor when it comes to suing companies for infringement of patents and technologies, but this time it is the other way round. Apple is the defendant in a case against them for intentionally and willfully infringing patents. The case has been filed by Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation(WARF) on the behalf of University of Wisconsin. According to the case, Apple has violated its own patent no. 5,781,752, referring to a “table based data speculation circuit for parallel processing computer”. The description of the patent is as follows - “a predictor circuit permits advanced execution of instructions depending for their data on previous instructions by predicting such dependencies based on previous mis-speculations detected at the final stages of processing. Synchronization of dependent instructions is provided by a table creating entries for each instance of potential dependency. Table entries are created and deleted dynamically to limit total memory requirements“. WARF has put forth claims that Apple has used its technology in achieving greater efficiency and performance in their new Apple A7 chip. The Apple A7 chip is the first 64-bit processor for handheld devices and is currently used by Apple across the range of its devices - iPhone 5s, iPad Air and iPad Mini ...

Just as several reports had predicted, Satya Nadella is officially the new Microsoft CEO, succeeding Steve Ballmer as the tech giant's third Chief Executive Officer. Having led several Microsoft divisions including the wealthy Enterprise and Cloud business, Satya Nadella becomes the insider CEO, after several reports of an outsider being considered as the next CEO. Bill Gates also announced that he will leaving the board Chairman position, leaving way for John Thompson to take over that post, which is seen as a move to appease investors of radically lesser influence from the Gates-Ballmer era. While we scour for more publicly available information, here's an introductory video directly from Microsoft - httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T8JwNZBJ_wI Here are a few snippets of his first letter to all Microsoft employees - I’ve been fortunate to work closely with both Bill and Steve in my different roles at Microsoft, and as I step in as CEO, I’ve asked Bill to devote additional time to the company, focused on technology and products. I am 46. I’ve been married for 22 years and we have 3 kids. And like anyone else, a lot of what I do and how I think has been shaped by my family and my overall life experiences. In our ...

Foursquare, the popular location-based social network, has just received a 15 million dollar investment from Microsoft. This equity investment from the Redmond company comes after a successful $35mn round of VC funding for the New York based Startup in December last year, reports the Wall Street Journal. Along with this fresh investment, Microsoft has also entered into a multi-year deal with Foursquare for licensing its vast location-based data. This will apparently be put to use in its Search Engine Bing, and naturally in Windows Phone too, as an extension. Foursquare has a massive point of interest database that's heavily crowd sourced with tips, check ins, comments and so forth, hence we think this deal is a biggie for Microsoft. Foursquare's CEO Dennis Crowley wouldn't reveal how much Microsoft is paying for this contract, but he does note that Microsoft is now the biggest source of revenue for the company. The app has 45 million users and increasing, with data of about 60 million restaurants and countless POI places. With this treasure trove of data, the Bing machine learning algorithms get to crunch more so that contextual search can benefit from this. In Microsoft's long pending announcement of its voice assistant, this ...

Compared to Q3 2013, Android showed a 0.3 percent dip to reach 51.5 percent market penetration. Trailing Android is Apple with 41.8 percent of the smartphone market being powered by iOS. This was a slight rise from the 40.60% market share it enjoyed in Q3 2013. The launch of the iPhone 5s and 5c are expected to have played a role in this rise. The remaining marketshare was split between with BlackBerry and Microsoft which are at third and fourth spots respectively with 3.4%, 3.1% penetration. In terms of Smartphone OEM market shares, Leaping over HTC and LG was Motorola that managed to gain 6.7% of the smartphone market share. This was no doubt catalyzed by good reviews and demand for its Moto G handset. The top two positions are held by Samsung and Apple. While the Korean company is the leading Android smartphone manufacturer, it still manages just 26.1% of the smartphone market share. Apple is clearly the leading smartphone manufacturer here with 41.8% of the US smartphone market. Apple launched the iPhone 5s and 5c ...

Things haven't really gone HTC's way since the rise of droids and HTC is trying to pull back things with their premium offerings. Last year, HTC announced their current flagship - HTC One to the delight of many Android lovers. HTC One defined styled in the Android smartphone market and came with an exceptional build quality and aluminum unibody. But the problem with the HTC One was their new UltraPixel technology which din't harness the results they would have expected. HTC went on to use the same HTC One design and build for the HTC One Mini and HTC One Max. Suddenly we had three similarly built devices lurking in various price ranges. Come 2014 and we have new expectations from phone manufacturers to bring their best in their flagships and we hope HTC will do better with the HTC One successor. HTC M8, the rumored successor, leaked sometime ago and sported the same old design. Now, another leaked photo shows even more clearly  how closely the HTC M8 resembles the HTC One(HTC M7). However, there are a few changes. The new HTC M8 will supposedly sport two camera sensors with dual LED flash on its back for better imaging. Two cameras ...

Google Maps for iOS and Android updated with faster route notification

Google Maps app for iPhone, iPad and Android already shows you alternate routes when you request for it while navigating. Google has updated these apps to show notifications if there’s a faster route. Google maps already shows bands of red, yellow and green along your route based on traffic conditions. The new notification option now lets you reach the destination faster with dynamic rerouting so that you can avoid heavy traffic in your chosen route. Google acquired Waze, popular crowd-sourced navigation app back in June and introduced real-time incident reports from Waze users for Google Maps for Android, iPhone and iPad in select countries. Getting traffic info would help dynamic rerouting since these updates are instant. Both these apps have also been updated with bug fixes.

Stephen Elop, the ex-CEO from Nokia, will be heading the expanded devices team at Microsoft, as per reports. Previously rumoured to be in the running for the top job at Microsoft, Stephen Elop now gets to lead the newly formed team, like previously agreed upon. This is pretty obvious now, as Microsoft just announced its newest CEO, Satya Nadella, who takes over the position from Steve Ballmer. Elop stepped down from his role as the CEO of Nokia immediately after the announcement of Nokia-Microsoft acquisition, to avoid a conflict of interests. The Microsoft CEO search went on for over six months and Stephen Elop was a prime candidate, if previous reports are to be believed. A lot of rumours circled around how Elop would want to spin off Xbox and Bing divisions if he becomes CEO and so forth, which had lent less credibility, but the fact that he was in the running was more pronounced. But finally, we have an insider CEO, and hence the previously agreed upon role of the Expanded devices head would go to Elop, who, along with Jo Harlow, Juha Putkiranta, Timo Toikkanen, and Chris Weber would transfer to Microsoft after the deal officially closes.
