Huawei Ascend Mate vs Samsung Galaxy Note 2

Huawei launched the Ascend Mate (MT1-U06) in India earlier this week at a price tag of Rs. 24,900, and we brought you the review of the device recently. We found the Ascend Mate as one of the best phablets under Rs. 25,000. Samsung launched Galaxy Note 2 in India last year, which is still one of the popular phablet in the India market. The company is also promoting the phone through EMI offers and Smart upgrade offers. The Huawei Ascend Mate would give a tough competition to the Note 2 mainly due the large screen and the price tag. We managed to compare both these devices. The Ascend Mate has a huge 6.1-inch IPS+ display at a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels at a pixel density of 240 PPI, while the Galaxy Note 2 5.5-inch HD Super AMOLED display at a resolution of 1,280 x 720 pixels at a pixel density of 267 PPI. Both the screens are bright, but the Super AMOLED display in the Galaxy Note 2 has better color calibration.  The Ascend Mate has a super sensitive screen that lets you operate the phone even with a thick gloves once you enable the glove mode in the settings, but the Note 2 lacks this feature. ...

Sony releases experimental ‘Illumination API’ for selected devices

Sony has just released a new 'Illumination API' for developers to allow them to tweak and create innovative uses for the embedded notification light bars seen in many Sony devices. Sony has released this as an experimental API with little information in terms of documentation. Developers shouldn't expect much if any support from Sony for the new Illumination API. It allows for controls like LED color, pulsation, time between pulses. On certain models it is also possible to control the fading patterns. The Xperia SP gets added support for sound reactive lighting. The list of compatible devices is fairly large and includes popular devices like the Xperia SP, ZL, ZR, UL, A, U, L, SP, SL, P, Sola, Ion, Acro HD, Go, M and M Dual. We've always liked the addition of the illumination bar on Sony's devices but felt that they were under used. With this move, developers should be able to plug the gap and make the devices that much more appealing. [Via - Sony Developer Blog]

Nokia Lumia 925 Unboxing and First Impressions

"Too fat and heavy" some shouted, and Nokia listened. The Nokia Lumia 925 fixes the two biggest complaints of then prospective Lumia 920 buyers, its thickness and weight. While the 925 does have some more features(or lack thereof) for differentiation, it was mostly like a hotfix patch for the Lumia 920. We had checked out the device earlier at the launch event in London. It looked a lot different and shied away from the colourful Lumia legacy with a more conservative look with Nokia having brought back aluminium into its fold again. But personally, not having had a personal hands on experience with the Lumia 925(unlike Varun) made me skeptical of the design, until now. Yes, the ritualistic unboxing shattered some pre-conceived notions of mine. We have thus documented the box contents and my initial impressions of the device in this video, watch - httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AS4HJHri7b0 Box Contents Pretty standard packaging from Nokia here, nothing special. Since we had the white version, the headphones alone in the package were white, we did wish the charger and the micro USB cable were white too, but hey, the Lumia 920 was similar, so they probably used the same. And here goes our detailed initial impressions of ...

Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom Hands On

$

The Galaxy Camera was the first smart camera to be powered by the Android OS but this year, Samsung have taken a different route to introducing smart cameras with the launch of the Galaxy NX with interchangeable lenses and the Galaxy S4 Zoom. As the name implies, the Galaxy S4 Zoom is the camera equivalent of the Galaxy S4 but it does have some great benefits that will appeal to the hardcore camera users. The S4 Zoom is the first smartphone to come with 10X Optical Zoom and also features a 16MP CMOS sensor with Xenon Flash. Yes you read right - the Galaxy S4 Zoom is a smartphone with an excellent camera. The S4 Zoom remains a very unique device as it is able to make and receive phone calls and act just like a smartphone. With all the positives, the S4 Zoom does have some major trade-offs compared to the Galaxy S4. On the back, the touchscreen has dropped from a 5.0 inch Super AMOLED Full HD display to a 4.3 inch qHD (540 x 960 pixels) Super AMOLED screen. Under the hood, the S4 Zoom is powered by a dual-core 1.5GHz processor with 1.5GB RAM. Only 8GB internal storage is ...

Hands on with the Samsung Galaxy NX

First there was the Galaxy Camera, then the Galaxy S4 Zoom and now the Galaxy NX. Samsung have been shoe-horning Android and mobile modems into their cameras for the better part of a year for reasons that most people, myself included struggle to understand. With the Galaxy NX however, this move is starting to make a degree of sense. The Galaxy Camera, while equipped with significant levels of optical zoom, underwhelmed as a camera in many regards. It was much larger than a typical point & shoot, much more expensive and took arguably worse pictures; a hard sell under the best circumstances. The Galaxy NX features an upgraded sensor, Android 4.2, a 20.3 Megapixel APS-C CMOS in addition to a plethora of interchangeable lenses courtesy of its compatibility with Samsung's NX series of cameras and lenses. This joins the LTE, 3G, WiFi and Bluetooth support that one would expect from the mobile SOC that accompanies the  DRIMe IV image Signal processor in the guts of this compact camera.  The Galaxy NX includes feature common to larger camera systems like an electronic viewfinder, pop-up flash, hotshoe, hybrid autofocus and a top shutter speed of 1/6000 of a second. What is most interesting to us is ...

The K900 is Lenovo's massive flagship device that recently launched in India for Rs. 32,999. Boasting some impressive specs, it has landed in our labs for testing. The huge 5.5 inch 1080p IPS screen is coupled with powerful internals such as the 2 GHz dual core Intel CloverTrail processor and the 13 megapixel Sony Stacked CMOS sensor camera, making it a very impressive package. This got us excited for the unboxing and the initial walkthrough of the device, which we captured in a video here - httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vnwXRcLlff4 Box Contents Shown above are the box contents. Pretty usual stuff, but we were disappointed by the lame earphones that accompanied the device, Lenovo could have done better. One thing we missed to mention in the video was the SIM ejector tool. Sitting inside the user manual box, what we initially thought was a logo or something actually turned out to be a SIM tray ejector tool for the phone. Regarding the phone itself, the display was brilliant. While the phone was slightly uncomfortable to hold at first, I quickly managed to get used to it thanks to my equally massive hands. The user interface seemed ok, but we would love to see stock icons here than round ...

Samsung Galaxy S4 Active AT&T Hands on

On Thursday in London & New York, Samsung made available its well-leaked and previewed variant of the Galaxy S4, the S4 Active. Having had a few minutes to play around with the device we came away with a few impressions, though a more detailed review will likely be a few weeks away. The build quality of the Galaxy S4 has been the subject of much discussion with opinions running the gamut from decent-but-not-brilliant to mediocre and much to my dismay the S4 Active is no different. Early photos gave the impression that the Active was a metal-clad device, replete with external screws. Sadly, the device is plastic, the same plastic that can be found on the Galaxy S4. It wouldn't be unfair to say that the design materials used in the S4 Active are no different from those found in the S4. As the name implies though, the S4 Active has been designed to be a life companion for the more active among us. As a a result, the S4 Active is built to IP67 standards. This means that not only is the device completely sealed to the effects and ingress of dust but can also be submerged in up to 1m of ...
