At an event in Beijing, we just witnessed the launch of Oppo's next flagship device. Dubbed the Find 7, the phone combines some hardware firsts with a range of software innovations to create a very intriguing product. Indeed, the phone brings some very tangible hardware innovations to create a smartphone that is geared towards giving users improvements that come in handy for day to day usage. We got to spend some time with the China spec variant of the device and here are our impressions. httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t_zynOqhSZQ [gallery link="file" ids="99230,99229,99233"] The design team at Oppo is clearly inspired by the likes of Apple, Nokia and HTC to create a design identity for their products. The Oppo Find 7 too has a design that flows with the existing brand identity yet manages to stand out on it's own merit. The front of the phone is mostly comprised of the 5.5 inch display which is unique in the fact that it amongst the first few devices in the work to sport a 2K display. In the brief amount of time we've spent with the handset, the display really stood out as being absolutely stunning. While the difference between 2K and Full HD panels is minimal ...

Samsung Gear 2 variant with SIM card slot for voice calls reportedly in the works

Samsung is planning to launch a variant of its Gear 2 smartwatch capable of making voice calls without connecting to a smartphone, according to a report from Korean Herald. Samsung plans to release the new version of the Gear 2 in Korea in partnership with the local operator SK Telecom. This would have a built-in SIM card or USIM (Universal Subscriber Identity Module) to use it as a standalone mobile device. According to the report, a source closer to the development said it might release globally eventually. LG had released a watch phone with built-in SIM card slot few years back. Last year a Chinese company Appscomm released a smartwatch with a Mirasol display and a built-in micro SIM slot to make and receive phone calls and read or send text messages. Samsung unveiled the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo running on Tizen OS at the MWC last month. Both these would go on sale globally starting next month. Samsung has partnered with Google to launch a smartwatch based on Android Wear platform. If the rumors are true, it would be interesting to see how manages to overcome the battery-life issue, since a built-in SIM module would drain the battery. Via

Huawei drops plans for its dual boot Android and Windows Phone devices

Last week, Asus dropped its dual boot tablet - Transformer Duet owing to pressure from Google and Microsoft. It looks like that was just a sign of things to come. Today, Huawei, a Chinese manufacturer has announced that it is dropping its plans to build a Android and Windows Phone smartphone. Huawei announced that it was working on a dual boot smartphone earlier this year and it was planning to release the phone in H2 2014. But now, it seems that the plan is completely dropped and it could be because of the pressure from both Google and Microsoft. Huawei has just dropped the idea for dual boot smartphones, but says that it is still open towards Windows Phone devices and that is a good news for you if you happen to like Huawei Windows Phones. Karbonn is another manufacturer that has announced that it has plans for a dual-boot Android and Windows Phone smartphone earlier this year, but after seeing Asus and Huawei drop their dual boot plans, it looks like it won't be long before Karbonn too announce that they are dropping the idea of a dual-boot smartphone. How to root Nokia X and install Google Play Apps

We had unboxed the Nokia X a while back, right after it launched in India. Only a few weeks back, Espoo's first bold entry into the low end Android smartphone segment was revealed at MWC. The phone might be running Android, a Google owned entity, but is completely devoid of anything that resembles Google services. Nokia completely forked the open source variant of Android, just like Amazon did, by choosing not to include Google services and apps, which are obviously a conflict of interests for the company. But being open source, the malleable Android is always willing to bend to our will, and soon enough, enterprising developers who got their hands on the Nokia X, devised a way to install Google apps and services onto this neat little device. We followed their path, and made a video, so that willing users can take advantage of it too - httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_smAYnH6A64 As you can see from the video above, the process is pretty simple, and we owe it all to a thread from XDA, which nicely details the steps to root, as well as install Google Play Services on your Nokia X. Anyways, this is what we did - How to get Google Play Services ...

Made of stainless steel, the Moto 360 Android Wear watch is designed to communicate and look good on the wrist while it does that. In a hangout broadcasted live on Motorola’s YouTube Channel, Jim Wicks, Lead Designer of the Moto 360, disclosed few features of the Android-wear watch, on Wednesday. A few questions which many were asking was about the material used in Motorola tech watch. Jim informed that Stainless steel of good quality has been used. Accompanying the round display are two types of straps, genuine leather straps and steel straps. Moto 360 has an option to change straps, too. Moto 360 hardware does not support a USB port which means that device is likely to charge wirelessly. Motorola Android watch is made waterproof. How deep can one dive with it, is not disclosed, yet. Diameter of display/case is about 46 mm. This size is reasonably big for a wristwatch and is used mostly for men’s watches. Jim Wicks was asked if Moto will make smaller display watches for women? Motorola has no immediate plans to do so. Perhaps, the given size of watch is perfect for information to be displayed comfortably. Motorola design team chose a round display instead of one with ...

Google Search for Android gets voice actions to launch camera

0
0
Google has added new voice commands to Google Search for Android that lets you launch the camera app to take a photo or record a video by speaking respective commands. Google Search already has an option to open apps just by saying "Open Instagram" or "Open Facebook". With the new “take a photo” or “take a video” commands, Google Search will launch the camera app in the preferred mode. These new voice actions just takes you to the video or camera mode, but you have to press the shutter button or recording option. In some devices like Moto G, there are two separate buttons to capture images and record videos, so both these commands takes you to the same camera interface, you get when you open the camera. Since most phones have lock screen shortcut to launch the camera quickly, it would be easier to launch the camera, instead of using these voice actions. Hope we can expect something like "take a selfie" option to launch the front-facing camera in future.

Oppo Find 7a Hands On

While Oppo's flagship device ie the Find 7 clearly stole the show, they also announced a 'lower' spec variant of the phone that will be making its way to India shortly. Despite being the lower spec variant, to call it a mid range device would be unfair as it's specs rival current flagship devices. Alongside the Find 7, we spent an extensive amount of time with the Find 7a as well and here we make an effort to bring you our first impressions of the device.  httpv://youtu.be/tYYwfJzMPnw In terms of dimensions, the two phone are virtually identical. Similarly, the focus on design continues on the Find 7a as well. Clean lines flow along the side of the phone while the front basically consists of a 5.5 inch display just like the Find 7. This is however where the differences start appearing. First up, the Find 7a has a lower resolution display compared to the Find 7. While the Find 7 gets a 2k display, the Find 7a has to make do with a Full HD panel. That said, this is hardly a deal breaking factor as the resolution is good enough for a 5.5 inch screen and the panel is rather good ...
