Qualcomm today announced the new Artificial Intelligence engine consisting of several hardware and software components to accelerate on-device AI-enabled user experiences. The new AI engine will be supported on Snapdragon 845, 835, 820 and 660 mobile platforms, and the latest Snapdragon 845 with on-device AI processing. Qualcomm details the key benefits of on-device AI include real-time responsiveness, improved privacy, and enhanced reliability. The AI engine gets its support from Snapdragon core hardware architectures like the Qualcomm Hexagon Vector Processor, Adreno GPU and Kryo CPU that are designed to run AI applications quickly and efficiently on-device. This approach gives developers and OEMs the ability to optimize AI user experiences on smartphones and other edge devices. Key features of the Qualcomm AI Engine include Snapdragon neural processing engine which is designed to make it easy for developers to choose the optimal Snapdragon core for the desired user experience including the Hexagon Vector Processor, Adreno GPU, and Kryo CPU and perfect their AI user experiences on the device. Motorola better phone-life balance study shows alarming results and usage of phones problematic

Motorola has conducted an independent research through research company Ipsos to understand the impact of smartphones on our relationships with ourselves, other people, and the physical and social environment. The study showed that smartphone users are putting their phones before the people they care about, and the younger generations who have grown up in a digital world are alarmingly addicted.  Furthermore, the study highlights the phone importance where One-third or 33% of users prioritize their smartphone over engaging with people they care about and want to spend time with them. This is seen as a major concern among younger generations, with over half of Gen Z describing their phone as a best friend. People want help with phone-life balance. In fact, 61 percent of participants agree that they want to get the most out of their phone when they are on it, and the most out of life when they are not. Last year's flagship Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ smartphones were launched in India in April last year exclusively on Flipkart, but the online retailer teased the phones only after the announcement. Now Flipkart has started teasing the upcoming Galaxy S9 series of smartphones even before the official announcement at the MWC 2018 on February 25th in Barcelona. Xiaomi launched the Redmi Note 5 and Redmi Note 5 Pro smartphones in India last week, which went on sale exclusively on Flipkart as well as Mi.com today at 12 noon. Manu Jain, Group Vice President and Managing Director of Xiaomi India just said that the company sold over 3 lakh units of the smartphones under 3 minutes, selling 1 lakh units per minute. In comparison, last year the company sold 2.5 lakh Redmi Note 4 smartphones in 10 minutes in its first sale. Apple said to launch new water-resistant AirPods with ‘Hey Siri’ support later this year

Apple is said to be busy working on a new AirPods with 'Hey Siri' support and water-resistance that are expected to launch later this year. Samsung Galaxy S8 Android Oreo update resumes with February security patch and bug fixes

Samsung recently canceled the Galaxy S8 and S8+ Android 8.0 Oreo update merely a week after the update was released citing the unexpected reboot issue. Now it looks like the update has finally resumed in Germany and just a matter of few days before it widely becomes available in the markets where the update had previously been released.  Just as it was reported, Samsung worked on a new version, probably one that doesn't cause the phone to reboot. The Oreo update for Galaxy S8 brings February security patch along with new Experience U.I 9.0 on based on Oreo for the version number G950FXXU1CRB7 and G955XXU1CRB7. For those who have installed the earlier update before it got canceled, the size of the new update is just over 530MB and for those who haven't, it will probably be larger in size. Google partners with 43 carriers and OEMs to accelerate RCS messaging

Google has been actively accelerating its RCS messaging experience on Android phones. The company recently partnered with Huawei, and today it announced that as of today it is working with 43 carriers and device manufacturers to bring better native messaging to every Android user. Google back in 2017 had opened up the Early Access Program to make it easier for brands to start participating in RCS business messaging and now companies from food, travel, retail and delivery services in the U.S. and Mexico have adopted RCS to have better conversations with customers. Intel has announced that it is partnering with Dell, HP, Lenovo, and Microsoft to launch 5G connected Windows PCs in 2019. The company will use Intel XMM 8000 series commercial 5G modems for the first high-performing 5G-connected PCs that are expected to be on sale from the second half of 2019. Intel said that it will showcase the concept 5G-connected PC 2 in 1 – connected by an early 5G modem at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) that is kick-starting in a couple of days. Google said to introduce ARCore 1.0 officially at MWC 2018, but the update is already rolling out

Google is pushing very hard on perfecting the ARCore to bring augmented reality and according to a report from The Variety, the company is planning on releasing the ARCore V1.0 at the MWC 2018 event. ARCore brings augmented reality to billions of Android phones without having to rely on hardware like project Tango. However, it looks like the update is already available rolling out a bit earlier than planned. Additionally, Google is also expanding the ARCore SDK support to all Nougat devices, instead of just Oreo in the previous V0.91 version. The Variety report states that the V1.0 version is a major push in augmented reality including the release of the ARCore framework to third-party developers. Google is aiming to make the ARCore available to more than 100 million phones in the near future, and expanding support to Nougat device is the right way to go since Oreo adoption just went past 1%. You can install the ARCore V1.0 via the traditional Play Store or download the APK and side-load it. Opera Max data-savings app renamed as Samsung Max, available only for Samsung smartphones

Opera introduced Opera Max, data savings app in the U.S. and Europe in 2014, which was launched in India in 2015. In the same year Samsung introduced Galaxy J2 with Ultra Data Saving mode powered by Opera Max and started adding the feature in other budget and mid-range smartphones. Last year Opera discontinued the app and said that it will not get any update. Today Samsung has took over the app and renamed the app as Samsung Max so all the existing users who updates the app will see the change. Samsung says that the upgraded version will now get updates from Samsung and will feature improved Data Saving and Privacy Protection Mode, along with an enhanced design and user experience. Samsung also said that the app will now be available only for select Samsung smartphones and non-Samsung smartphone users will be not able to use it after the application. It also said that Samsung Max will come preloaded on all Galaxy A and Galaxy J series smartphones in India, Argentina, Brazil, Indonesia, Mexico, Nigeria, South Africa, Thailand and Vietnam. Huawei P20 with dual rear Leica cameras, top-notch surfaces on certification site

Huawei is expected to introduce its flagship smartphones in the P20 series at separate event in March in Paris. We had seen several renders of the smartphones in recent times. Now two smartphones with model numbers EML-AL00 and EML-TL00 have been listed on TENAA in China, which could be P20. This shows iPhone X-like top-notch that we had seen in the P20 Lite but the fingerprint sensor is present on the front instead of back in the P20 Lite. The image reveals a metal body and Huawei branding on the back. It shows dual rear cameras with LEICA lenses, which hints that only the P20 Plus will feature triple rear cameras. The phone is rumored to run Android 8.1 Oreo with EMUI 8.1 on top and is expected to be powered by Kirin 970 SoC. Samsung starts building new EUV semiconductor line, to invest $6 billion by 2020

Samsung back in September announced that it is working on 7LPP (Low Power Plus) with EUV (extreme ultra violet) lithography technology for smartphones that is targeted for initial production in the second half of 2018. Today, as expected, the company has announced that it is building new EUV (extreme ultraviolet) line in Hwaseong, Korea. Samsung will use EUV technology starting with its 7-nanometer (nm) LPP (Low Power Plus) process. Yesterday Samsung and Qualcomm announced that they have expanded their foundry partnership for on EUV process technology and also said that future Snapdragon 5G mobile chipsets will use Samsung’s 7nm LPP EUV process technology. Samsung said that the new EUV line will enable to strengthen its leadership in single nanometer process technology to meet demand from various applications, including mobile, server, network, and HPC (high performance computing). The new facility is expected to be completed within the second half of 2019 and will be ready for production in 2020. The initial investment in the new EUV line is expected reach USD 6 billion by 2020 and the company said that additional investment will be determined depending on market circumstances. Source

Xiaomi signs MoU with Microsoft for cloud support, artificial intelligence and laptops

Xiaomi today announced that it has signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Microsoft to collaborate in cloud computing, artificial intelligence and the development of equipment for use with notebook computers. The companies will also collaborate in personal assistants using their own existing devices, including Microsoft’s Cortana. [HTML1] Partnership with Microsoft is not new for Xiaomi. In 2015 Microsoft tied up with Xiaomi to offer Windows 10 ROM for the Xioami Mi 4. In 2016 Xiaomi acquired 1,500 patents from Microsoft and said that it will pre-load Microsoft Office and Skype apps on its Android smartphones and tablets. The same year it also introduced Mi Notebook running Windows 10. With the latest partnership Xiaomi expects to bring more new products and services to its users and also allow Microsoft to reach more users using Xiaomi products.
