Spice Retail launched Stellar 520 and Stellar 526 handsets in the Stellar range last week. Now the Smart Flo Mi-359 and Stellar 451 3G, affordable smartphones running on Android 4.4 are available on Saholic. The Smart Flo Mi-359 is any entry-level phone with 3.5-inch HVGA screen, 2G EDGE support and a 2-megapixel rear camera with LED flash. The Stellar 451 3G has a 4.5-inch FWVGA screen, 3G connectivity and a 3.2-megapixel rear camera with LED flash.
Both these smartphones have a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera, powered by a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera and dual SIM support. Looks like the Smart Flo Mi-359 is inspired from HTC One.

Asus launched the Zenfone series of smartphones in India last month. We reviewed the Zenfone 5 recently. The Zenfone 6, top-end model in the series with a 6-inch HD display is priced at Rs. 16,999. It is one of the few large-screen smartphones in this price range to launch in India recently, apart from smartphones like the Xolo Q2500 PocketPad and Lava Magnum X604 from local manufacturers. Sony Corp, Panasonic Corp and Japan Display Inc has announced a joint venture to develop organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays, with the government-backed Innovation Network Corp of Japan (INCJ) taking a majority stake.
The companies have established a new entity that will be called JOLED Inc which will focus on medium sized OLED displays in tablets, smartphones mobile PCs and wearables. OLED technology enables displays to be lighter, thinner and more flexible. The new company is scheduled to be launched in January 2015.
As a result of joint venture INCJ and JDI will respectively hold 75% and 15% of the voting rights in JOLED, and Sony and Panasonic will each hold 5%. In addition, INCJ and JDI plans to make additional investments to fund a pilot manufacturing plant when the technology is ready for commercialization.
The venture will integrate Sony and Panasonic’s OLED R&D functions with an aim to accelerate the development of OLED panels and become a leader in the global OLED display market. It aims to bring together technology from all parties including flexible displays, printing technology for OLED production and transparent amorphous oxide semiconductors.

Earlier this week we reported that Xolo would launch its Play 8X-1000 smartphone with HIVE UI in the first week of August. The company has just sent out press invites for the HIVE event. Even though the invite did not mention any details about the smartphone, the company already confirmed that Play 8X-1000 would be its first smartphone with HIVE UI.
According to earlier rumors the Xolo Play 8X-1000 would feature a 5 inch HD display with Gorilla Glass 3 protection, powered by an octa-core processor and 2GB of RAM.
The HIVE UI based on Android KitKat introduces a new user introduce such as new quick settings screen with circular controls to adjust brightness, controlling volume levels and setting the screen timeout, new lockscreen, Media Centre with last.fm integration for recommendations, new Contacts Book that lets you access all the conversations with a contact in a single thread, custom themes, customizable app drawer and more.

Samsung today opened its first flagship Customer Service Plaza in Delhi that aims to offer best in class after sales service for Samsung customers. It also has specialized zones for product demonstrations and customer interactions. Each Plaza will have three distinct zones – the Greeting Zone, Consulting Zone and Interactive Repair Zone. This also offers live repairs in front of the customer to ensure complete transparency in terms of repair charges and parts replacement.
Located at Okhla in Delhi, the service plaza is huge at 26,000 sq. ft. After sales service is a huge concern in country like India, where several companies don't have service centres in all the cities in the country to serve the customers. Samsung has 2,800 service touch points, biggest service network in consumer electronics industry, supported by a network of nearly 50 parts warehouses and 4 world-class training academies, said the company.
The company offers remote support through 3G technology for Smartphones and Smart TVs. It recently introduced pick and drop facility for select flagship Smartphone models. Samsung plans to extend the Flagship Plaza concept to major Indian cities in future.

Android continued its dominance in the smartphone market and accounted for a record 84.6% share of global smartphone shipments in Q2 of 2014, according to research by Strategy Analytics. Global smartphone shipments reached 295.2 million units in Q2 said the report.
“Global smartphone shipments grew 27 percent annually from 233.0 million units in Q2 2013 to 295.2 million in Q2 2014. We estimate worldwide smartphone growth has halved during the past year, from 49 percent a year ago to 27 percent today. ”
said Linda Sui, Director at Strategy Analytics in an official release.
Android accounted for 249.6 million smartphones shipped in the quarter, up from 186.8 million a year earlier, and about seven times more than the 35.2 million Apple iOS phones shipped. The market share of Apple's iOS slipped to 11.9% in the quarter from 13.4% in the same quarter last year. Microsoft saw Windows Phone sales decline to eight million units in the quarter from 8.9 million a year ago resulting into a dropped market share to 2.7% from 3.8%.
Giving insight about smartphone vendor market share Strategy Analytics said that Samsung remained the world's largest smartphone vendor, with an estimated 74.5 million phones sold as compared to 76.0 million a year earlier. ...

The first two Xiaomi flash sales left quite a few disappointed, after they were unable to purchase the device. Both times, the Mi 3 went out of stock pretty quickly; 39 minutes the first time, and an astounding 5 seconds is what the Xiaomi Mi 3 took to go out of stock during the first and second flash sales respectively.
What left Indian buyers confused was the fact that Xiaomi failed to reveal the number of device that went on sale each time. The company has been in the flash sale business for quite some time, and it isn't often that they don't unveil the number of devices that were sold.
However, the good thing here is that they've revealed the number this time. The next flash sale is set to happen on August 5th, registrations for which have been going on since 29th July. Xiaomi announced via their social feeds that 15,000 units of the device will be made available for the August 5th sale, which is believed to be more than either of the previous sales.

Rumors of HTC's upcoming Windows Phone handset have been going around for a while now. That the handset will be a play on the popular HTC One M8 was also expected. Today, we get a look at a leaked render of the handset that shows it to be nigh identical to its Android counterpart.
The render emerged on Verizon's site and shows hardware that is very similar to the Android running HTC One M8. The all metal device can be seen in a slate grey color. Above and below the display are HTC BoomSound speakers but surprisingly the lower grill is skewed much further down. If it is an intentional design feature, we find it quite off putting but we'll retain our judgement till we've actually got some time with the phone. The device will also supposedly bring along the IR Blaster alongside the HTC TV application.

Micromax started selling Canvas Knight A350 with Android 4.4 (KitKat) back in June and it relaunched the Canvas Knight officially with 2GB of free data for Vodafone customers. At that time the company did not reveal any details about the KitKat update for current users. Now the company has started rolling out Android 4.4.2 (KitKat) update for the Canvas Knight users, according to DroidGuru.in.

The Android 4.4.2 (KitKat) update for the Canvas Knight A350 is about 388.18 MB and is available over-the-air (OTA). Flappy Bird creator Dong Nguyen said in an interview back in May that he would bring back the game in August with multiplayer capability. He also said that the game would be less addictive than the original. Now the creator has released a new game, Flappy Birds Family for Amazon Fire TV, an Android box that was unveiled recently. The game is not available for Android smartphones or tablets.

Flappy Bird for iOS was released in 2013 and soon arrived on Android. It suddenly became a phenomenon on both Android and iOS platforms months after it was released . It also became the No.1 game on both these stores and was generating thousands of dollars in revenue from in-app ads. Suddenly the creator decided to pull the game from the app stores.
The new Flappy Birds Family game has different-colored bird characters, local multiplayer mode and more obstacles like ghosts, for players to avoid. It is free to download on Amazon Fire TV and doesn't include any ads like the first Flappy Bird game. It is not clear if or when the game would be available for other Android and iOS devices.

Motorola is the fourth largest smartphone vendor by shipments in Q2 2014, overtaking Nokia (Microsoft), according to handset sales tracker Canalys. Few months back Motorola announced that it shipped 6.5 million smartphones globally in Q1 2014. According to the report, Motorola shipped 379,310 units of smartphones in India in Q1. The company did not reveal its global shipment data for Q2 yet, but the Canalys report says Motorola has shipped 955,650 units in the Q2 2014.
Microsoft, that now owns Nokia has just 633,720 and grabs the fifth spot in the ranking. As usual, Samsung, Micromax and Karbonn are the top three smartphone vendors in India based on shipments. Sony, that was in the fourth spot in Q4 2013 has been bushed back in both the first and second quarters of 2014. Smart phone market sequentially grew 9% in the second quarter of 2014 and the increase in sales of Moto G helped Motorola to grab the fourth spot, says the report. The company launched the Moto X and Moto E in India in the past few months.

Acer has launched the Iconia A1-713, the company's new Android tablet in India. It was unveiled at the New York event back in April along with the A1-713HD and packs a 7-inch (1024 x 600 pixels) display, powered by a 1.3 GHz quad-core MediaTek MT8382 processor and runs on Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean), upgradable to Android 4.4 (KitKat). It has a 2-megapixel rear camera and a VGA front-facing camera.
It has 3G support via SIM card slot, voice calling and has anodized silver finish.

Lenovo's K920, a Quad HD smartphone with flagship-level specs, went official about two months back after a prolonged stint with the rumour mills. According to reports, the Chinese manufacturer might be working on another variant of this powerhouse of a phone.
It is being said that Lenovo are working on a mini version of the device, which will possibly be called 'K920 Vibe Z2 Pro Mini'. Of course, this is only speculation, and there's no word on this from Lenovo yet.
What is funny though, is the fact that this rumoured mini version of the phone will come with a massive 5.5-inch display, which is far from any 'mini' phone we've seen in the past. Specifications-wise the device will have a set nearly identical to the elder brother, in the Snapdragon 801 SoC, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of on-board storage.
Screen resolution is expected to go down to 1920 x 1080p from the QHD resolution of the Vibe Z2 Pro, which does make sense if Lenovo want to sell it for cheaper. Speaking of price, the Vibe Z2 Pro mini is being touted as a sub $350 phone, so don't be surprised if you see this launch for a price tag ...
Slowly but surely, a lot of mid-range Android devices are getting the crucial v4.4 KitKat update. Crucial, because the KitKat update on these mid-range devices is much more required than by the higher-end ones, which don't gain as much from the update.
The LG G Pad 8.3 Android tablet received the update earlier today. Although it took quite a long time coming, it is finally here, giving users of the device some much needed respite. Besides the usual bug-fixes, the v4.4 KitKat update brings a few feature enhancements as well.
Among these, the best known and perhaps the most awaited one is the inclusion of the LG Knock Code feature, which allows users to unlock their device in a variety of different ways (86,367 different ways, according to LG).
As with any other Android update, the G Pad 8.3 update too be rolled out in phases to avoid server overload. So, if you haven't gotten an update notification yet, don't lose patience!

HP has released first images of its upcoming luxury smartwatch thereby announcing its foray into the competitive smartwatch market. The company has partnered with retailer Gilt and US designer Michael Bastian for its premium smartwatch that will be compatible with iOS and Android devices via an app.
According to the image, the HP luxury smartwatch sports a round dial similar to the elegant looking Motorola'a Moto 360. It will sport a 44mm stainless steel casing and three hardware button controls. The design is said to draw inspiration from the luxurious interiors found in high-end automobiles. Designed by popular US based designer Michael Bastian, the smartwatch will be sold through online retailer Gilt this year.
The HP smartwatch will include notifications for email, text and calls. Moreover, the app will offer music controls and display weather forecasts. It will be “water resistant” and have a battery life of up to seven days. The smartwatch will also get support for interchangeable straps in nylon olive green, brown leather, black rubber, and a limited edition black strap.
HP will design the software for the watch which means it will not run on Google's Android Wear OS. There is no word on the pricing of the HP smartwatch but is clearly targeted towards luxury market.

Microsoft has sued Samsung in U.S. District Court, over patent licencing deal. The company claims that the South Korean giant has stopped making royalty payments on time last fall and is refusing to pay interest for the delay.
"After becoming the leading player in the worldwide smartphone market, Samsung decided late last year to stop complying with its agreement with Microsoft"
said Microsoft's David Howard, Microsoft Corporate Vice President and Deputy General Counsel in a blog post.
Under a 2011 deal, Samsung pays Microsoft an undisclosed amount of royalty for each Android phone and tablet it sells. Microsoft claimed that Samsung is using Microsoft's April acquisition of Nokia's phone business as an excuse to stop complying with the contract. The software giant also claimed that Samsung is not willing to make the payments as it has become a leading player in smartphone market with high sale numbers.
In a statement, Samsung said, "We will review the complaint in detail and determine appropriate measures in response". The lawsuit does not mention the exact amount Samsung owes to Microsoft. Patent disputes have become an inseparable part of the smartphone ecosystem. Apple and Samsung lawsuit is one of the most high profile smartphone patent cases.
