Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 with 13.3-inch WQHD display, Windows 8.1 announced

After its 8-inch and 10.1-inch Yoga Tablet 2 models, Lenovo has announced a 13.3-inch model. It has a 13.3-inch (2560 x 1440 pixels) WQHD IPS Display with  178-degree viewing angle and is powered by a quad-core Intel Atom Processor, similar to the 13.3-inch Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 Pro tablet. This doesn't have a built-in projector like the Yoga Tablet 2 Pro, but comes with JBL large-chamber stereo speakers, a 5W subwoofer and Wolfson Master HiFi CODEC chip for an enhanced audio experience. It has a battery cylinder and includes four modes – Hold, Stand, Tilt or Hang. It comes with a Bluetooth AccuType keyboard cover. Lenovo completes Motorola acquisition for $2.91 billion

Lenovos's Motorola acquisition is a done deal. Motorola Mobility is officially a part of Lenovo as the $2.91 billion acquisition that was announced in January earlier this year has been completed. The total acquisition cost is approximately US$2.91 billion, including approximately US$660 million in cash and 519,107,215 newly issued ordinary shares of Lenovo stock, with an aggregate value of US$750 million, representing about 4.7 percent of Lenovo’s shares outstanding, which were transferred to Google at close. The remaining US$1.5 billion will be paid to Google by Lenovo in the form of a three-year promissory note. A separate cash compensation of approximately US$228 million was paid by Lenovo to Google primarily for the cash and working capital held by Motorola at the time of close, states an official press statement from Lenovo. "The iconic Motorola brand will continue, as will the Moto and DROID franchises that have propelled our growth over the past year. Intex to launch new start screen interface for its smartphones based on Start by Celltick

After Karbonn, Intex has partnered with Celltick to launch an intelligent interface for its Android smartphones, based on Start launcher. The company already announced that OEMs can partner with them to create own flavor of Start. Celltick will become the default start screen interface on Intex's Android smartphones. The Start interface has a recommendation engine that learns and adapts the start screen based on big data technology and uses collaborative filtering to individualize the initial configuration and also offers ongoing recommendations based on user behavior. Other features include, themes, wallpapers, RSS feeds and more customization options. The Celltick Start start screen app has been updated with a new user interface recently. Samsung Galaxy A5 and Galaxy A3 with slim unibody metal design announced

Samsung has officially announced the Galaxy A5 and Galaxy A3 smartphones in its new A Series, after several rumors.Both these smartphones have full metal unibody, slim designs. These are Samsung’s slimmest smartphone to date. The Galaxy A5 is just 6.7mm thick and the Galaxy A3 is 6.9mm thick. These are aimed at young and trend conscious consumers, says the company. Coming to the specifications, the Galaxy A5 has a 5-inch HD Super AMOLED display and the Galaxy A3 features a 4.5-inch qHD Super AMOLED display. Both these are powered by 1.2GHz Quad-Core Processors, have LTE support and run Android 4.4 (KitKat). Google Play Books for Android gets Material Design, skimming and browsing features

Google Play Books is the latest app that is being given a Material Design tweak. The Android app for Play Book is being updated with redesigned reading experience that’s optimized for nonfiction books. The new Play Books reader lets you skim an entire book, browse all your notes and highlights, and jump back and forth between different spots similar to a physical copy of a book. A new Quick Bookmarks” tool allows users to jump between different spots within an ebook quickly. Google has added a “Notes & Highlights” feature that provides an overview of all the notes from a particular ebook. This tool is suitable for students. Also added is a "Skim mode" that  zooms out to show pages as a film strip when tapped in the center. It allows to slide between pages easily with the help of a progress slider at the bottom. In case of looks the Play Book app gets colored status bar, new animations, and a redesigned navigation menu. Xiaomi appoints Spotify’s Donovan Sung to lead international product development

Xiaomi has hired Spotify's Donovan Sung to lead international product development, according to a latest report from TechCrunch. The report comes weeks after the Chinese telecom maker hired Jai Mani as lead product manager in India. The report said that Xiaomi has poached Sung from Spotify where he was the service's first product manager in the US and had a pivotal role in the music streaming services development. Sung is also a former Googler and has worked with the search giant between 2008 and 2012. Xiaomi has not officially confirmed the appointment yet but the Sung has revealed on his Facebook account that he is quitting Spotify, said the report. Sung who is bilingual, will act as a bridge between Barra and Xiaomi's executive team, most of whom are not fluent in English, added the report. In August last year, Hugo Barra leaved Google to join Xiaomi. Ever since then, the company is keeping the Google connection in its core team hiring. Xiaomi has quickly gained popularity with its affordable and value for money Mi devices. Xiaomi tablet with 9.2-inch display, Snapdragon 410 SoC shows up in benchmarks

Xiaomi introduced their first tablet, the Mi Pad back in May, now a 9.2-inch tablet with 1280 x 720 pixels display and a 1.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 410 processor with Adreno 306 GPU has surfaced on GFXBench database. The tablet that runs on Android 4.4.4 (KitKat), according to the listing, doesn't have a name yet. This was first spotted by Gizmobic. A 9.2-inch 720p screen has just 160 ppi pixel density, but this could be a prototype or the tablet might not be final yet. Apart from the display and processor, the benchmarks reveal 1GB of RAM, 8GB of storage, the usual set of connectivity features such as Bluetooth, WiFi and SIM support. Xiaomi is already a popular brand in Asian markets, including India for its smartphones in affordable price range. A budget tablet with SIM support and voice calling capabilities would be a great addition. We just have to wait for more details to find out if the product is real.

LAVA International has launched Iris Fuel 50, the company's first smartphone in the new Fuel series with a 3000mAh battery that promises 1.5 days of battery life. It has a 5-inch FWVGA IPS display, powered by a 1.3 GHz quad-core processor and runs on Android 4.4 (KitKat). It has a 8-megapixel autofocus rear camera with dual LED flash and 2-megapixel front-facing camera. It comes with dual SIM support and 3G connectivity. Skype for iPhone updated with faster chat and photo saving feature

Skype has updated iPhone app with an array of features based on user suggestions. The app gets an improved chat experience as chats will now load quickly after tapping a new message notification. Photos that have been received via chat can be saved in your device's camera roll. They can also delete sent photos from a chat which can be done by simmply pressing and holding the image and selecting the necessary task from options. In addition, Skype for iPhone will also feature the display of all avatars for groups and people in chats. Finally, the update offers quicker access to the search and filter options for the people list in Skype for iPhone. Skype has been constantly updating its iPhone app with new features and enhancements. Android co-creator Andy Rubin leaving Google to start hardware incubator

Android c0-creator Andy Rubin has decided to leave Google, as per latest report from the Wall Street Journal. The report said that he will be moving on to launch a hardware startup incubator. Rubin’s departure comes roughly 18 months after he stepped down from leading the Android team at Google. James Kuffner, a research scientist in the division, will take over Rubin's job. When Rubin left Android, he was replaced by Sundar Pichai in march, who already oversaw Chrome and Apps. Rubin cofounded Android in 2003 with Rich Miner, Nick Sears, and Chris White, and Google acquired the company two years later. “I want to wish Andy all the best with what’s next. With Android he created something truly remarkable—with a billion plus happy users. Thank you.” said Google CEO Larry Page in a statement. Google has seen a lot of leadership changes lately. Google Wallet adds recurring bank transfers, low balance alerts and more

Google is updating a bunch of new features to Wallet. One of the key features is the ability to add money to your Wallet through recurring bank transfers. Money will be added to your Wallet Balance automatically, and you can cancel your transfer at any time. In order to set up a recurring transfer users will need to go to "Add Money" and select  "Set up a recurring money transfer". The schedule for the transfer can be selected from weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly. Google said that there would be no fees or minimum balance requirements in order to set up the automatic transfer.  Users can also set up low balance alerts. The update also brings Google's new material design to Wallet. Also, users can lock or cancel your physical Google Wallet card from within the app, in case it is lost or stolen. Google Wallet update is rolling out in the US next week and is available on Android and iOS. via

Google Camera app version 2.4.008 that was present in the Android Lollipop Developer Preview has Material design elements. Today Google has updated the Google Camera app to version 2.4.023 on the Play Store that brings the same material design elements to the app. This update also brings compatibility with Android 5.0 (Lollipop) that would roll out for Nexus devices in coming weeks and includes some improvements and bug fixes. After the Google Play Store, Google Chrome, Google Play Newsstand, Google Play Music, Google Play Movie and TV, Google Drive, Docs, Sheets and Slides, and more recently the Google Play Book have got new Material redesign. Google released the Google Camera app on Google Play earlier this year. Since then the app has been updated frequently with new features. It was recently updated with remote shutter feature for Android Wear and redesigned Panorama mode UI. Google has started updating all its apps with new Material Design interface to match Android 5.0 (Lollipop). The new Google Camera update is now available from Google Play Store.

Sony reports Q2 FY14 results, 9.9 million smartphones shipped

Sony Corporation today reported net loss of 85.6 billion yen ($785 million) for its second quarter of the financial year 2014 that ended September 30th. Even though it shipped 9.9 million smartphone in the quarter, mobile communications division has reported an operating loss of 172 billion yen ($1.6 billion) for the quarter. Loss in the mobile communications sector is primarily due to the favorable impact of foreign exchange rates, partially offset by a decrease in sales mainly in Japan as well as an increase in marketing expenses, says Sony. It expects sales to be below the July forecast primarily due to an expected decrease in the annual unit sales of smartphones mainly in China. Restructuring charges, recorded as operating expenses were 24.7 billion yen ( $226 million) for H1 FY14 compared to 12.5 billion yen for the same period of the previous fiscal year. Overall sales were 1,901.5 billion yen (17,445 million U.S. dollars), a 7.2% increase compared to the same quarter of the previous fiscal year. In the first half of the financial quarter 2014, Sony has reported an operating loss of 174.7 billion yen. BlackBerry has rolled out an update for its BBM app on BlackBerry 10, Android and iPhone that gets new privacy features such as  Timed Messages feature that lets you set a timer to control how long messages and pictures you share with contacts can be viewed and Message retraction feature that lets you cancel the message in case if you had sent it to the wrong person. Gmail 5.0 for Android with support for Exchange and other email accounts now available

Details about Gmail 5.0 for Android with support for IMAP, POP3 email accounts like Yahoo and Outlook surfaced couple of weeks back. Even a promo video of the new Gmail app showed up. Now Android Police has got hold of the APK of the Gmail 5.0 app that brings all these new features, including support for Exchange accounts. The Gmail 5.0 app also brings Material Design, as expected, rounded avatars, refreshed iconography and more. Google released Inbox, a new alternative for the Gmail app, but it doesn't support Google Apps account or other email accounts apart from Gmail. Google's stock email app already supports IMAP, POP3 and Exchange accounts, but it is available only for Nexus, Google Play edition and Android One devices. Xiaomi is bringing another 1,00,000 units of the Redmi 1S smartphones for India on November 4th. As a surprise, the company has announced that, lucky fans those who tried to buy Redmi 1s and failed, will find the device added to their cart on Flipkart on November 4th. It did the same thing for Mi 3 during Diwali, but it only offered 25,000 units for lucky ones. This time it did not announce how many lucky fans would get their Redmi 1S smartphone in their cart automatically. It also offers  10% discount on select Redmi 1S covers on November 4th. Totally the company has sold about 6.4 lakh Redmi 1S smartphones in India till October 28th sale. Still it is getting lakhs of registrations every week. The iPhone 6 has a non-removable 1,810mAh Lithium Polymer battery, which is slightly larger than the iPhone 5's 1560 mAh battery.
