Micromax's YU introduced the YUREKA smartphone at an event yesterday for Rs. 8,999. The first YU branded smartphone runs on CyanogenMod 11 based on Android 4.4.4 (KitKat) and has 4G LTE, including support for LTE bands in India. We got to check out the smartphone at the launch event. Here are our hands-on impressions. The 5.5-inch HD IPS display looks good and the viewing angles are decent. The display is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3. The YUREKA is powered by a Octa-Core 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 (MSM8939). It has a 5MP front-facing camera with OmniVision 5648 sensor, 4P lenses and offers 71-degree wide viewing angle. Since the phone has a 5.5-inch screen, it is huge, but it's not heavy. It has the usual set of capacitive touch buttons below display. Only the home button has a circular outline. All the buttons are backlit. The smartphone has curved corners so the thinnest part is 6mm, while the thickest part is 8.8mm. The build quality is decent. It has matte finish on the back that gives it a smooth rubber-like feel, even though it is made of plastic. Poor treatment of workers in factories supplying heavyweight Apple have been exposed by an undercover report by BBC Panorama. Featuring never-seen-before coverage from inside factories, it shows workers sleeping whilst operating machinery out of sheer exhaustion by the number of "mandatory hours" they are being forced to work. Apple has worked closely with factories in the region to implement standards designed to protect workers but the Panorama investigation found that these were being routinely breached by factory management. One undercover reporter, working in a factory that produced parts for Apple's computer range, was forced to work 18 days in a row despite repeatedly asking for a day off. Another report said (after a 16 hour shift): "Every time I got back to the dormitories, I wouldn't want to move. "Even if I was hungry I wouldn't want to get up to eat. I just wanted to lie down and rest. I was unable to sleep at night because of the stress." The poor conditions in Chinese factories have previously come to light when 14 workers were killed in a Foxconn factory in 2010. Following those suicides, Apple implemented new standards including limiting the total hours workers would work in a week and limiting the amount ...

Last month a Korea Time report said that Samsung is planning to shut down its ChatOn messaging service. Soon after that Samsung denied saying that those were just rumors. Today Samsung has confirmed that it will shut down its ChatOn services in all markets except for the US in February 2015. In an official statement, Samsung said: On February 1, 2015, ChatON will be discontinued in all markets except the United States, as we strive to meet evolving consumer needs by focusing on our core services. We remain committed to offering services that cater to our consumers' lifestyles and add value to their everyday lives. Users would be able to back up their data before the shutdown. ChatOn was first launched in 2011 and is said to be used in 120 countries. Even though it comes pre-installed on Samsung devices it is not being used by every Samsung smartphone user since there are a lot of alternatives. ChatOn has only 50 million monthly active users (MAUs), which is very low compared to its competitors such as WhatsApp, WeChat, Viber and WeChat.

The BBC Panorama report into Apple's supply chain only aired last night but the company has been quick in its response. In an exclusive email leaked to the Telegraph, the company's CEO Tim Cook and Senior Vice President of Operation Jeff Williams have issues a response that says they are "deeply offended" by the BBC's allegations. In the email - which was sent to around 5,000 staff in the UK, William said both himself and Cook were "...deeply offended by the suggestion that Apple would break a promise to the workers in our supply chain or mislead our customers in any way. Panorama’s report implied that Apple isn't improving working conditions," he continued. "Let me tell you, nothing could be further from the truth." Williams went on to say that the company had shared various facts and perspective with the BBC in advance but they were "clearly missing from their programme". In the Panorama report, the BBC claimed that although Apple clearly outlining the standards it expects its supply chain to adhere to, the reality was that very little had changed and workers will still forced to work long hours (in some cases over 20 percent more than Apple's max guidelines). The report also ...

The Galaxy Note 4 in its fourth iteration, is the latest in a series of big screened devices created by Samsung. Back in 2011, when creating big devices, the maximum usage of available screen real estate was not part of core OS design. However, thanks to the flexibility of Android, Samsung created solutions that brought true multi tasking on a phone. Called Multi Window, Samsung allowed two apps to run at the same time, in small windows. On the Note 4, it gets better. How? Let's find out. httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ISMLIKCg5Q Samsung's Multi Window feature was initially limited to few apps, but over the time, thanks to rapidly increasing pixel density and Android's flexibility, scaling of third party apps has become easier. The Note 4's Quad HD display takes advantage of this and renders a lot of apps in small windows. Not all apps are supported yet but most mainstream ones work and they work well. On the Note 4, there is now a new swipe down gesture from the top right that directly minimizes the app into a floating window. You can have more than two apps in this view, but naturally it will be too crowded. So, to quickly partition two apps into ...
